If you think you know why US newspapers died, this feature documentary now streaming for free on PBS might surprise you. It wasn't the Internet. Newspapers were specifically targeted by vulture capitalists.

I composed the score for the film, which features electric cello & Crowfoot guitars.

This is how you do it, Democrats. You don’t turn against those who need your support. You do everything you can to help them. Also, extra props for not hiding the dark parts of NYC’s history. Goddamn, Mamdani is so good at this.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Oh hell no. I go through a few airports next week. Last thing anybody needs is any government official on an airport teevee blaming any one political party for things like ATCs not showing up because they're not getting paid. The ones on the teevee dealt that one, kids.

Tell me your bagel order and I will tell you *based on NYC cultural expectations* if you have won or lost your election for political office in NYC.

One of my favorite things about NYC is whenever anyone runs for office here they are required to disclose their bagel order.

Encouraged by the example of MIT, I wrote today to the new president of UT-Austin, my alma mater, to ask him to reject Trump's foolish and authoritarian "compact."

For other UT alums, Jim Davis's e-mail is [email protected].
Email to president@utexas.edu. Subject: President Trump's Compact.

Dear President Davis,

Good morning. I'm a two-time graduate of UT-Austin (BA English 1989, PhD American Studies 2003). My parents are both UT grads. I've been a visiting professor at the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies, and I'm a Life Member of the Texas Exes. I'm a proud, multigenerational Longhorn.

I'd like to ask you urgently to reject President Trump's harmful and illegal "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education."

As I'm sure you know, MIT has already rejected the compact, and no doubt many other respected institutions will do so soon.

Free inquiry and academic freedom are critical to the success and proper functioning of any university, and it would be tragic if UT-Austin were to sacrifice its long tradition of academic excellence by submitting to an unconstitutional and autocratic demand from the White House. It is simply not the president's right or role to dictate to any university what its faculty can teach, say, or research. He must be resisted.

The UT community, and you as its leader, should stand firm against the president's direct challenge to the integrity of the University and to the prestige of the degrees we earned there.

Please reject this outrageous assault on academic freedom and the University's most deeply held values.

Thank you.

Respectfully,

Bryan Edward Stone, Ph.D.

It's the burbs, for crying out loud. There's loads of parking there. They SHOULD stay open 'til 9 pm. This used to be a proper country, indeed.
