"Imagine you stole all of the intellectual property in the world. And you're using it to help people write middling emails and make revenge porn about women, and also children. And you're powering this plagiarism and non-consensual porn machine by eating up what's left of humanity's carbon budget."
How to explain AI to your family this holiday season | CNN Business
Politics, football and movies are among the many topics that tend to come up around Thanksgiving. In 2025, a new question may arise at the table: Why the heck is everyone talking about AI, and what sh...

People will die, and are currently dying, because RFK was granted one of the most powerful megaphones in the country. Two people who could have thrown barriers in front of his climb decided not to; there's a sex scandal here but it is not the biggest scandal.

we really need charming threads right now, and this is one. Delightful. Happy Thanksgiving!
OK - pie discourse - best pie story:

In 2016, we were living in Andover, in the UK. My wife was assigned as an exchange officer at the Army Air Corps base at Middle Wallop (yes, really).*

The US Army has a tradition: senior leaders, in dress uniform, serve junior troops Thanksgiving dinner.

the state of my writing day:
closer to finishing a draft of a short story that i'd outlined, but part of outline fell apart, & so now the story aside from the narrative is full of notes:
(go back and put detail in earlier)
(move this scene up earlier so it makes sense)
(merge these two people) /1

I love HEB (very well run TX grocery chain). With 20,000+ people under a boil water notice they've got pallets of water right at the front (they did have to shut down their seafood section--no ice). Whether a local issue like this or a major hurricane response they are ON IT

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

It says a lot about our country that the FBI had no interest in interviewing Brett Kavanaugh but wants to talk to Mark Kelly.

with our water outage i saw people on FB asking ChatGPT about it and whether their neighborhood was affected, like it was a currently reliable news source (they kept getting bad info)

I still think about this sometimes, and wonder how many of the 12 books the friend liked.
A customer just came into the shop and bought 12 books for her friend’s birthday. She’s going to wrap them individually and write a different month of the year on each one, so her friend has a new book to read every month until her next birthday. And I think that’s just the most thoughtful gift.

this is exactly what I'm in the mood for (I read The Dark is Rising series last Christmas season) so thank you for the recommendation
You know what’s ripe for a comeback is the Wolves of Willoughby Chase series by Joan Aiken. Smart & non-condescending YA, fantastical without being fantasy, dark and Dickensian as hell, extremely lefty and anticapitalist, a full dozen sequels, amazing Edward Gorey covers.

every day multiple reminders we've turned our country over to the dumbest of the dumb, where bent knees are valued far more than competence
So if the DOJ’s ‘Become a Deportation Judge’ page won’t load on your phone, here’s why: they Base64-encoded multi-megabyte images directly into the HTML. Nothing says ‘tech savvy’ like shipping a 7-million-character <img> tag.
