for a comfort read, I have thoroughly enjoyed the first 3 "Wolves Chronicles" by Joan Aiken, which take place in an British alt-history where James III is King, with the Hanoverians plotting to take the throne. Each of the 3 has a different lead character, but other characters recur throughout /1

i shouldn't be shocked that he's made an innocent woman's murder about himself but here we are, because there is no cruelty he will not embrace
