"Every day, I am struck by all the ways in which we are reliving the 1890s.

"In that era too, consumers organized, using their buying power to affect politics."

Heh, I had my warm-up last night. Baking another cranberry orange tart after work today.
Good morning from the most hectic baking day of the year, the pinnacle of home baking, all of our prep has led to this moment.

Put on your tennis shoes and soften some butter, it’s Geaux Time.

"A lot of famous bands I know would be horrified if anyone wrote a book like this about them. The internal struggles are given equal weight with the artistic and commercial success, highlighting that fact that a hit record just creates the opportunity to have a whole new set of problems."

There was a dive bar in my old 'hood in New Orleans that was perpetually smoky and was there to serve up mostly beer. It had been there for ages and was in no way a "concept", it just grew into its dive state. Only after a place has hung on by its fingernails for many a decade is it a dive.

Having been up close and in the Spruce Goose a few times, that's some gargantuan parenting going on.
Helicopter parenting? Psssh, way to smother your kids. I'm more into Spruce Goose parenting
Helicopter parenting is for losers. How about you try fighter jet parenting and raise some real warriors

If you live in a city with a decent Chinatown and are hosting or attending a potluck Thanksgiving, I highly recommend getting some char siu and chopped roast duck. Always a hit with my friends, not that expensive, and barely any leftovers. Sometimes I pick up egg tarts for dessert.

One year we got a turducken and enjoyed it so much we decided to order one & have it sent to my TN grandparents' house a week pre-Thanksgiving. She treated it like a usual turkey & thought thawing it out in the fridge the night before would do the trick. We had it on heating vents & hairdryers...

Went out for dinner thanks to the power cuts and encountered the power blinking out and then back on at a nearby intersection. Still lots of rain & lightning, too.

I figure Ken Burns has one, maybe two big documentary series in him before he fully retires. What do you think they should be? My votes include Football, Hip-Hop, World War 1, Reconstruction (though Skip Gates did this one well), Iraq/Afghanistan, 19th Century Expansionism.

So yes, it was a small tornado. Lots of the roads into our old neighborhood are blocked off now. Power's back on for us, thankfully, but there's a lot of cleaning up of downed trees happening.

Wow, nearby subdivision clearly got hit by something tornado-like. Trees ripped outta the ground there, had to take some alternate streets to get through.

She reported him missing to Houston police. But instead of reuniting them, the city turned him over to ICE.

“They’re failing all of us,” his mom said.

So a while back I was commissioned to do short bios of various rock stars, and they were just about universally total psychopaths, with the huge exception of Freddie Mercury. A lovely man who did good by his wife, his lovers, and his cats.
Today (24 November) marks the passing of Freddie Mercury, lead vocalist and pianist of the rock band Queen. He remains regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music.
