Your correspondent here in war ravaged Portland, at the moderately busy airport where lackadaisical travellers are headed to Disneyland or Spokane, no doubt fleeing for their lives. Relief supplies down to essentials like cold craft beer and marionberry jam.
Check out “Together Spokane” & come to the Rally! Improvements to every neighborhood, indoor aquatics, lighted fields, trades high school, “In Real Life” no screens activities for all! #Spokane

Cool thing about Spokane: we banned these in city limits
This story introduced me to a new "innovation": bitcoin ATMs, or BTMs. They convert cash into crypto, which can then be transferred to a digital wallet.
And guess what? They facilitate impersonation fraud, routinely. DC's attorney general just sued one of the big operators. James Baratta reports:
Crypto Bank Machine Operators Swindle Seniors
Once described as the ‘AR-15s of the financial services industry,’ crypto ATMs remain a hotbed for scams targeting vulnerable communities. But third-party fraudsters aren’t the only ones laughing all ...

The Washington state legislature authorized this incentive. #Spokane is using it to replace surface parking lots with housing.
The Pavement to People Program encourages the construction of affordable housing on underdeveloped parking lots. The first project utilizing this program is in the pre-development and design stage! This is a step in the right direction, as downtown Spokane needs an additional 3,200 housing units.

Spokane was the first (and I think still only?) city in Washington to authorize the Pavement to People tax incentive, which cuts the sales tax on new construction materials to 0 if developers build homes on a vacant parking lot.

Now it's finally bearing fruit! 🎉🏠

This is transformative! They have a waiting list of dozens of unhoused people who want to work. The City of #Spokane is a partner & we are exploring ways to expand our partnership. We need non-profits, faith communities & private businesses to join us in giving people the dignity of contributing.
Dignified Workday is doing incredible work in our community. They are connecting folks experiencing homelessness to jobs and helping our Code Enforcement teams with garbage and litter cleanup.

Agree! And supporting the Marshallese, Hmong and other communities that are living here is very important, as well as opposing the Trump order denying law-abiding Haitians and Venezuelans living here a path forward, and speaking out about the failure of Congress to stop the ICE raids.
Spokane has the 8th largest urban Native American population in the country and is home to the 3rd largest population of people from the Marshall Islands in the world. Significant first languages spoken in our city other than English are Spanish, Russian and Vietnamese.
