Hi #portfolioday! I’m Lainey Williams, a cartoonist and illustrator. I love to write and draw queer romance, surreal fantasy, and strange horror comics.

portfolio: laineywilliams.com
agent: @litagentsaritza.bsky.social
Color comic page showing a woman in front of a forest of trees lit red and shadowed blue by the setting sun. She looks out at the sun, then turns back toward her sled filled with pinecones. As she does, there’s an insert panel of a goose’s wings pressing down in flight. The woman, Marika, turns back toward the setting sun to see the goose’s silhouette. Her stomach rumbles. She grips her bow and begins to short-ski up a snowy hill toward the goose and the setting sun. A page from the webcomic Crash Coral, written by Randall Avilez and drawn by Lainey Williams.
Panel 1: a teen girl in a sweatshirt pours syrup on her pancakes. “I—I think—No, I am gay. I’m gay.”

Panel 2: her dad shoves food in his mouth while her mom sips coffee. They’re in a diner.
Dad: …ok.
Mom: Are you…Did you realize this only recently? Is…someone bullying you or something?

Panel 3: Coral, the teen, slides down on her vinyl seat, looking frustrated.
Coral: No no one’s bullying em. I woulda just punched them.
Dad: Right.
Coral: But yeah, I just found out or whatever at the show…on friday?

Panel 4: Coral looks up at the ceiling fan turning above her head.
Coral: And I think I’m in love with ricki…

Panel 5: Her parents stare at her, frozen for a moment. Dad’s mouth is still full of food.

Panel 6: Same composition, but Dad is grinning arrogantly and Mom is rolling her eyes with a smile.
Mom: Don’t even say it.
Dad: Wasn’t gonna—
Mom: I don’t know how you even knew. Comic page showing three girls walking into a mock Guitar Center called Monster Music.
Panel 1: From left to right, they say “Wow!” “You guys seriously haven’t been to Monster Music before?” “Nope!”

Panel 2: Mikey, the white girl on the left, says “They have everything!” Kira: “Including a backup generator.” None of them acknowledge the huge floaty rift in reality crossing through the ceiling

Panel 3: Kira looks on as the other two girls wander away.
Kira: We still have a lot of stuff to unpack…
Daniela: I just wanna look around for a second.
Mikey: Yeah, be right back. A comic page without text, rendered in bright pinks, cyans, oranges and yellows.

P1: a roadside diner at sunset with a pink mountain range in the background. IT’s called the redwood diner, ad the sign is backed by a stylized cloud with a sun peeking out behind it.

P2: Two white women sit at one of the tables at the diner. One has long brown hair in an updo and is wearing a pink dress. She’s in the middle of putting a fry in her mouth. Her friend is looking over at her. She has wavy, short green hair and a trench coat on.

P3: View over the girls’ heads. An orange doorless jeep is visible pulling off of the mountain highway into the parking lot of the diner.

P4-5: The two women run down behind the diner into the redwoods that surround it. There’s an insert panel of a blonde white man in a letterman’s jacket shouting at them—apparently the driver of the jeep.

P6: The brown-haired girl runs ahead, but looks over her shoulder at the green-haired girl.

Got my 2nd piece done for #ABLArtFest - this one is for #TheCrystalBallReveals! This started out fun and ended up slightly ominous… what with the approaching rain clouds and all.

Child with black pigtails and a green hoodie gazes into a crystal ball sitting on a brown wooden chair. A friendly spider is perched on top of the crystal ball. Inside the crystal ball is a treehouse with a same size spider web built next to it and a tiny image of the kid and the spider waving at each other. In the top of the crystal ball are approaching rain clouds. All of the image is rendered in cut paper.

The Hearth (1/21)

A sapphic horror comic about witchcraft and hunger in the dead of winter.
An illustrated cover for a short comic called The Hearth by lainey williams. A cabin sits in a clearing in a snowy forest. The small windows in the log cabin are lit yellow and there is a trail of blood through the snow leading to the door. Smoke rises from the cabin’s chimney to surround the title. On either side of the smoke are illustrations in the style of Karelian embroidery, showing stylized geometric patterns in red thread. On the left side embroidery section, there is a depiction of a woman kneeling. her hands are stained red and she wears a headscarf. Opposite her is a woman standing. Instead of a left arm she has a wing. Over the top of the image, two geese shaded in red fly over the cabin and smoke. The trees all around the cabin are shaded in dark blue.

When you’re driving your father-in-law to his birthday dinner and the visor isn’t long enough but the sun bothers his eyes… and you happen to also be a professional driver.

Is it any wonder why I’m madly in love with this man?
Photo of an elderly man in the front seat of a car with the front visor down. An arm is visible with their hand under the visor to add extra protection from the sun.

In a dimly lit room: a girl is startled standing near a crystal ball and candles on a table. The crystal ball appears to be breaking and lighting up it's surroundings. A plume of a smoke like form is emerging from the crystal ball. You can make out distorted and pained faces in the smoke.

My 1st piece for #ABLArtFest - the prompt was #fallfestivities!

I adore the sneaky dragon, the determined bunny, and the trying-ever-so-hard robot…. But the mad scientist and dog for sure “steal” the scene (see what I did there?!).

#kidlitart #illustration #cutpaper @andreabrownlit.bsky.social
Four kids are trying to eat donuts hanging on strings without using their hands. The first one is a curly redheaded white kid dressed as a purple dragon and is cheating- using their hands to hold the donut. The second is a south Asian kid with straight black hair in a large pink bunny suit. The third is Black kid with an Afro and a hair pick, dressed up as a mad scientist - his donut has been stolen by a white dog. The dog is running away with the donut. The fourth kid is a smaller white kid dressed as a robot who has not gotten any donuts yet. There’s a large tree with fall leaves and a stone wall in the background.

A Bluey fan art illustration by Wren Rios, it shows the interior of the Heeler household. There’s a shoebox and a jar in the foreground, bugs crawling in and out of each. Some bugs on the floor as well. There’s a butterfly in the air above and to the left of Bluey who’s stood confidently in the center, she’s wearing a striped tie and a pen in her ear, holding a clipboard in one hand that features a rudimentary drawn house with a bug in it. She’s stood beside a large briefcase and behind the briefcase is Bingo who’s cautiously hiding with a worried face.

concept illustration I did a year and a half ago for the hearth (sapphic horror romance comic I'll be sharing throughout October)
Surreal image of a snowy forest with two women in it: one is standing in a clearing holding a bow up, having just shot an arrow, and the other imposed on the yellow sky looking down in surprise or fear. She wears a green embroidered cloak. Flying around her, facing the opposite way, are two geese. There are motifs of simplified goose icons on either side of the main illustration.
