Kirkus starred review for AT THE EDGE OF LOST by Martha Brockenbrough: The love between a boy and his dog transcends danger and storms. When seventh grader Caleb’s grandfather falls ill as a variant H5N1 virus begins to infect humans, Caleb and his elderly Irish wolfhound, Ronan, find themselves separated by the Puget Sound. Caleb’s State Department parents are in Vietnam with his younger brother, and Caleb has been living with Poppy in Leisure World, a Seattle retirement community. But a deathly ill Poppy has to go to the hospital, his house is put under quarantine, and Caleb is taken to live with Poppy’s estranged sister, Great-Aunt Pat, on nearby Bainbridge Island. She says she doesn’t have room for Ronan, who’s left in Poppy’s house while Mom and Dad make a plan for his care. Ronan escapes to find Caleb, but he’s hit by a car and injured. The chapters alternate between narrators Caleb and Ronan. Brockenbrough’s voice for the wolfhound is amusingly formal and dignified, while Caleb comes across as bright and full of snarky middle school bravado. Caleb’s loyal best friends, Gen and Liv, provide comic relief, bickering with each other and making wry observations. Caleb’s impulsive nighttime journey across a stormy Puget Sound in a dinghy to find Ronan is thrilling. Brockenbrough combines page-turning suspense with moving philosophical and contemplative moments and plenty of admiration for the breadth and depth of science and the universe. The main characters read white. A triumphant tale of survival and connection.

Ask the Agent Q of the Day - Do picture books need to have conflict?

A: Yeah, but it may not look how you think "conflict" looks.

(I saw GOODNIGHT MOON used online as an example of a PB with no conflict, but I strongly disagree! Look at the illustrations! Sheesh!)

Booklist starred review: Throughout her life, Louisa May Alcott loved writing. The second of four daughters in the Alcott family, she actively supported education, abolition, and other progressive ideas. When her father, a teacher, was out of work, his daughters helped out at home and earned money for the family by working as teachers or domestic servants. The four girls were closely supportive of each other, and Louisa’s sisters enjoyed her stories. She aspired to become an author, and after serving as a nurse during the Civil War, she returned home and wrote about what she knew best: growing up in the Alcott family. The book was very successful and others would follow, but none was more beloved than Little Women (1868), which continues to enchant young readers. The emotionally expressive illustrations are formally structured—painted traditionally, then textured digitally and on paper. Hannigan’s biographical picture book offers a lively introduction to Louisa as a child and as a young woman living in a close-knit American family during the 1800s and sharing her experiences with generations of girls. Fans of Little Women will enjoy the appended section comparing facts from Louisa May Alcott’s life with parallel experiences from Jo March’s life in Little Women.

Foreward starred review for TINY WORLDS by Brittany Cicchese: "A tender tale about seeing the world differently and loving one another all the same, this picture book is a hug put to paper. A boy visits his grandmother in her small house that holds an even smaller world: the miniature Tiny Town the boy glued, taped, and painted together with cardboard and found objects. Grandma tries to draw him into the bigger world, but the boy seeks out a tiny world everywhere he goes—and Grandma learns to appreciate them, too." School Library Journal starred review for TINY WORLDS by Brittany Cicchese: "In this embracing work, a young boy goes to stay with his grandmother for a while. His favorite thing to do is create tiny towns, useing natural materials and items from around the house to crafts roads, houses, parks, and businesses. The boy’s tiny towns then become settings for adventures he imagines. His grandmother encourages him to play with other kids, or big animals, but he persists in finding quiet corners to create his own spaces. On a trip to the beach, he shows his grandmother tide pools and suggests that slowing down and noticing small things is valuable too. The artwork has an organic feel, with a leafy green, gold, and brown palette. The pictures are detailed and the youngest readers will enjoy identifying the many elements in the tiny towns. Older readers will have questions about the boy, such as why he is staying with his grandmother and for how long and why he does not want to play with other kids—questions which could lead to interesting inferential conversations. The story could also be an excellent mentor text for building community and exploring architecture, or in a more whimsical venue, fairy houses. VERDICT: This warm and accepting picture book is an excellent addition to any library."
