As have all religions. The Dalai Lama does a lot of politics, as do newer religions like Scientology (though the Scientologists are much more secretive about it all and are less focused on the big picture than the older religions).

There was some very deliberate blocking of Opus Dei to make sure they didn't have any real say in who the next pope was. Also some very targeted appointments of American clergy to try to counteract some very right wing Cardinal. The Catholic church has been doing politics for a very very long time.

I'm an atheist (I just grew up without religion and not believing in any of the gods) but I've come to appreciate the role religion can play in both oppression and liberation, and the current and previous pope seem to be on the liberation side (despite all the faults of the church and patriarchy).

I read elsewhere that he tried to peddle this nonsense to a bunch of Catholic theologians who told him he was very misguided. I assume he thought he could take over the Catholic church ideologically somehow (other than getting an Opus Dei pope, which the last pope made sure didn't happen).

He doesn't believe in Christ/God but he loves the authoritarian structures of religions and would like to implement that for his own benefit (and thinks everyone but him are stupid sheep that will be taken in by this nonsense). Plus the Catholic church has called out their AI and fascism bullshit.
