The giant eye is also a claw clip, I’m in love
mainewitch.bsky.social
Made an excellent spur of the moment purchase today
Two hair clips; on the left an ivory claw clip decorated with blue eyeballs, on the right a claw clip that is shaped and painted like a giant blue eyeball

similarly, as others have pointed out, acolyte was ripe for being star wars' answer to the current romantasy boom only for suits to shrug their shoulders and prematurely end it when their most beloved fans yelled like toddlers (I mean, stream numbers or whatever)

if you hear a creative or a creative-adjacent person say something along the lines of “whatever you think about AI, it’s here to stay” they probably just got pAId

Feeling extraordinarily virtuous right now after doing this AND scheduling an oil change, it’s almost as if I’m a functioning adult

Btw my Nana texted me a couple days ago. Because she has an iPad, which she absolutely does know how to use! I wish we lived in a just world because she would’ve discovered the cure for cancer or something.
mainewitch.bsky.social
Relatedly I think about my Nana’s lifespan a lot. She was born in 1928 and is still with us. She voted for Adlai Stevenson! Also her father lived from 1878-1975, which in some ways is an even wilder period to experience. He never learned to drive because cars were invented when he was an adult!

you ever think about those real weird overlaps. like tennessee williams might have listened to the ramones

Listening to some Blank Check back catalog episodes and in one they briefly discuss the 1993 Dennis the Menace film and recommend the listener look up what Christopher Llloyd looks like in that movie and MY GOD. I was NOT prepared.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Honestly I’m starting to think that Yakety Sax is the protest anthem of our generation. It’s shockingly effective.

Whenever anyone says how much of the U.S. economy is tied to AI right now, I'm like...damn, what if a single rich person had any idea other than "try to zero out labor costs through theft."

Literally what people sound like to me when they “defend” AI

The Orphan Crusher is here to stay. If we don’t feed more Orphans to the Crusher the Orphan Crushing industry will die. It’s time to wake up to the reality of the Orphan Crusher. The Orphan Crusher is worth billions. We need to teach people to use the Orphan Crusher. It’s here to stay.

Yes, his storytelling is so potent. This one always gets me too:

“And who am I to try to compete with the din / As the silence so easily rushes in? / I will fly away / It was something that I only dreamed of / Something that I'm not quite sure of /Something that I'll never tell you about”

Oh yes, frequently! She’s told me all about going to school in a one-room schoolhouse, the local lady who wasn’t called a midwife but would come and help with births, driving to the store in a horse-drawn cart since her parents didn’t drive…she’s got so many stories!

Mine is just a couple months older than yours, and yes, she’s smart as ever (sincerely I think she could have been a nuclear physicist if she hadn’t grown up in poverty and left school to work). She remembers the 1930s like it was yesterday.
