It seems I've earned myself the title of the Afrikaner reply guy, receiving multiple block awards. Some random thoughts on the matter.

A thread. For footnotes, see end of same.

Cars actually stopping for pedestrians is a repeated surprise each time we visit. And I've always found it strange overseas* where there is almost no acknowledgement of strangers passed on the street.

France, Netherlands, Sweden, Finland. Especially Sweden stood out.

Not sure how relevant it is, I can share some detailed photos from uniforms in Vienna. It's amazing the intricate needle work to get those designs.

Recently visited Vienna. Definitely worth it, don't know how it compares. Add a day trip to Mauthausen + Cemetery of the Lost, and you have a bit more than just the tourist dives.

The wife took History of rock and roll as a credit gaining subject. She still uses the knowledge in the most obscure moments.

I can do vegetarian if needs be for visitors. The wife has big time iron issues with a sprinkling of IBS so we can't even contemplate going vegetarian.

And it started to rain. My tree leaf lapa only works for so long...
Leaves of a tree against the back drop of the sky. There is smoke visible in one corner.

Time to meat.

Pieces of meat on a grill above a fire. There is a t-bone steak, some kebabs and wors.

Wild animals? I thought there was only one of you?

They do seem to be more like cats and not dogs. Really enjoy the snippets you share. Our cats just don't perform for the camera.

I don't have this as a problem (very small fish in this pond), but I'm going to keep the strategy in mind.

Time to read up on the Fugitive Slave Act and the antebellum Resistance.

This kind of kidnapping, whether it's otherwise law-abiding undocumented workers, or 🇺🇸 citizens, ICE thugs act like they get a bounty per head (they already get a $50K signing bonus), these goons would have been slave catchers back in the day.

Bynum Demands End to ICE Raids After U.S. Citizen Allegedly Abducted by Masked Agents
Bynum compares ICE’s conduct to U.S. Marshals hunting down Black Americans under the Fugitive Slave Act.

One of the ICE agents who apprehended Frank Miranda, a U.S. citizen, on Oct. 2, 2025 (courtesy of Frank Miranda). (Frank Miranda) U.S. Rep. Janelle Bynum (D-Ore.) called on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to stop abducting her constituents, a week after ICE agents apprehended a Milwaukie man born in California on his way to work and detained him for part of the day.

“These ICE raids are reminiscent of the Fugitive Slave Act, when the U.S. Marshals would hunt down and kidnap Black Americans,” Bynum said in a statement. “That was a dark and shameful time in our nation’s history—we must not allow that to repeat. Masked federal agents aren’t welcome in our state and they can’t keep kidnapping Americans.”

Life is either boredom or whipped cream. - Voltaire

The most fun thing about researching the history of whipped cream is discovering that for centuries before it became a topping, whipped cream WAS the dessert!

Wellness influencers are killing people. Paloma Shemirani was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which 80% of people survive, at age 22. She was dead within 7 months because dietary changes and coffee enemas didn’t work. Her airway collapsed under pressure from a tumor and she died at age 23.

White House staff should just make and show him an AI-generated video where he wins, fly him to Duluth and tell him it’s Oslo, and dare the New York Times to say anything more than “Experts disagree about whether Mr Trump was awarded the Nobel Prize”.
