Having to write these bios gives me a sense of existential dread. In other news, some people on other platforms think I occasionally have interesting things to say.

I know not everyone can keep up with all the grant terminations, but it’s important to know what we’re losing so I’ll try to compile them here.

First is a study on intimate partner violence with perinatal women (note: the #1 cause of death during pregnancy is homicide)

bsky.app/profile/rebe...
Today I lost an NIH grant training clinicians to do research about intimate partner violence with perinatal women.

More women are murdered in the perinatal period than die of obstetric complications.

I didn't just lose a grant. We lost an entire cohort of people building careers to prevent that.

If you're going to shop this week, the best thing you can do for your community & workers is focus on small businesses, local shops, and independent artists. Hit up your Main Street. Hi, I'm a NY times bestseller and a multiple National Magazine Award-winning journalist.

I've had FT jobs or multiple gigs going ever since I moved to New York a decade ago.
almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

I would guess an extremely high proportion of Americans who know who Dershowitz is despise him. Shows how out of touch Weiss is that she said the majority of Americans align with him.
I’m still thinking about Bari Weiss saying that Hasan Piker (extremely popular influencer) is less of a measure of where Americans are than Alan Dershowitz (extremely unpopular Epstein associate, his own neighbors won’t sell him a pierogi)

I should have mentioned I was still on a limited-minutes phone plan bc that’s what we had in 2002. I would get notifications I was over minutes some months.

Sales rep had no idea what I was talking about. He also didn’t know how we texted before smartphones and thanked me for a history lesson 🤣
I am actually calling my phone company to switch my phone plan, a plan I’ve had since 2002. This is a recession indicator.

As we all get bombarded with emails and texts about holiday sales, a reminder that there is a blackout happening from today through Monday. Pls consider at least not buying from major corporations during this time unless you think things are hunky dory.

@msroth.bsky.social is the only one of the university leaders in this conversation who sees this moment clearly and is willing to call it out. It does not bode well for us, as a society, that the other folks don’t seem to get it.
“I think this initiative has as much to do with scientific research as the early [antisemitism] initiative had to do with protecting Jews. This is an extortionist move to try to hold institutions that are heavily dependent on federal funding, as research institutions are, to have leverage over them.

When the author asks RFK Jr about his nicotine habit and use of tanning booths, both of which are health hazards, RFK Jr says people shouldn’t do what he does—they should just get in shape.

His team is out there blaming individuals for their health problems, but there’s no accountability for him.
Icky? Way worse! He looks like Magda in There's Something About Mary, except that's REAL and not makeup! He's a waste of human skin whose death belongs in the front section of every newsmedia🤮

*Have* come to harm. I recently learned he was one of the HIV-AIDS denialists. His lies have probably cost hundreds if not thousands of lives.
This is an irresponsibly favorable profile of RFK Jr, painting him as a vaccine skeptic rather than what he is: fervently anti-vaccine. Whether the reporter caved to pressure from RFK Jr or is so ignorant of science he doesn’t understand how many will come to harm bc of him, this is shameful. +

The real poverty line is around $140k for a family of four, but it’s perversely hard to get there:

“Every dollar you earn climbing from $40,000 to $100,000 triggers benefit losses that exceed your income gains. You are literally poorer for working harder.”

I’m perplexed by that woman who thinks the solution to young Jewish people seeing people in Gaza murdered every day is to take away cell phones, not for Israel to stop murdering people. It’s an astounding conclusion.
