15 years in the making, we confirmed that mitochondria - the powerhouse of the cell - have an unusual localization in patients who experience psychosis (including schizophrenia and bipolar disorders). You’ll never guess what kind of patient cells we used to make this discovery… 🧵
mitochondria from bipolar patients are closer to the nucleus in these images; control patients' are spread out further

Super excited about this ongoing spatial transcriptomics study in locus coeruleus of human 🧠. Expression of norepinephrine neurons - TH🔴, DBH🟢 and SLC6A2🟡 overlaid on post-Xenium H&E stain, allowing correlation of neuromelanin content (brown pigment) w/ gene expression #FluorescenceFriday 🔬🧪
mRNA expression using in situ sequencing (Xenium) on a tissue section at level of human locus coeruleus shows expression of marker genes for norepinephrine-producing neurons (TH in red, DBH in green, and SLC6A2 in yellow. Expression of markers is overlaid on the H&E histology staining, which shows cell bodies (purple) and neuromelanin (brown)

Happy #FluorescenceFriday! This is a maximum intensity projection of depth shaded actin (🌈) in a section from an E9.5 🐭 neural tube (NT). 🔬 by postdoc @christinaadaly.bsky.social 👩‍🔬 🧪 Image shows the floor plate and lumen of the developing NT.

My first time sitting down with a real sample. Phase separated membrane in a yeast lysosomal vacuole. Green is the V-ATPase, in the liquid disordered domain, and magenta is Ivy1, a protein that associates with the liquid ordered domain. This vacuole is about 2 microns in diameter.

Also, re: the glossiness of those berries - yes, it is really striking. I have a Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) right near that plant also with amazing fruit set this year, but with them close together struck me how glossy the Chokeberry was.
