With several new followers: I have one foot in Classics/ancient history and another in the writing community. I teach Greek history at the Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha, answer "asks" on Tumblr as public history, and write history-inspired SFF and historical fiction. Not a prolific poster here, alas.

This is good, and should actually make us feel better.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson temporarily blocked a ruling that required Trump to fully fund SNAP because she’s playing chess, not checkers. She sent it back to the lower courts for a reason. 👀

For I was hungry and you argued all the way up to the Supreme Court that poor people don’t deserve to eat.
#BREAKING: The Trump administration is asking #SCOTUS for an immediate “administrative” stay of a Rhode Island district judge’s order that is otherwise requiring it to resume the distribution of SNAP benefits from other funding sources no later than the end of today.

Remember the "Israel says they will cut agreed aid by half" headlines? Then shortly after, "Israel agrees to do what they said they would do and allow aid into Gaza"?

The 'ceasefire' agreement was 600 trucks per day. Half was 300. They've allowed 100. Someone explain to me why this is okay.
Inspired by the shellacking Democrats gave Republicans in the elections yesterday. A student asked me earlier if Alexander ever faced opposition. Gave me a chance to talk about the Mutiny-that-wasn't (India) plus the real mutiny at Opis, which took ATG by surprise. What caused it + how he responded.

To my mind, this was the real wake-up call of the night. Some of this is in the (bluer) north, but still. MISSISSIPPI went blue.
That was a fast call. Given all the other wins tonight, not surprised. Now, I'd like to know by how much. :-D

I’m sure there are many horror stories about sudden spikes in premium rates. This was totally avoidable and exactly why Democrats drew a hard line.

Thanks. Ha. And yeah, y'all happened to be expanding on one of my pet peeves. :-D
This is why people who dabble in history and then try to make sweeping generalizations wind up sounding like idiots to the actual specialists. Alexander is regularly used and abused in this way (not just here). Annoyed me enough to found my own YouTube channel: youtube.com/@mathetria-a...

Also, the story was probably invented later. :-) Alexander was following an Athenian fashion that hadn't yet made it to Macedon, where athletes increasingly wore short hair & clean faces (at least up to age 30). There's a fair bit of speculation as to why, but in the end, fashion is its own reason.

Don’t take it from me, listen to Snopes! Speaker Johnson signed a bill to cut $186 billion from SNAP. And again, it’s HIS party that won’t help millions of Americans put food on the table this month.
House Speaker Mike Johnson signed bill cutting $186B from SNAP in July 2025
Users shared this true claim amid uncertainty regarding whether Americans would receive federal food benefits during the 2025 government shutdown.

$5M in Shein stock is crazy. to put it in perspective, a child would have to work three billion hours in a Shein factory to earn a 1/10000th of this
This was an AMAZING series. Honestly. I enjoyed it so much. Was rooting for the Jays, but really great baseball...what this series *should* be. Both teams battling right to the end. Jays, you're awesome, even if you didn't win. Your US/southern fans have your back!
Congrats, LA.

And EQUAL congratulations to the Jays— y’all may not feel it right now but you pulled off some AMAZING baseball.
3 reasons why it's hard. 1) Money. 2) Also, money. 3) Scholars do not actually agree on some big points. This can come as a surprise to folks but just because X scholar said ___, Y scholar, using the same sources, will argue ___ instead. Why? The ancient source themselves disagree, sometimes majorly
Second year in a row where applesauce was the big hit, especially with the littles. And especially because I had flavored (strawberry or cinnamon). Teens and older kids tend to want just candy. Ha.
