Lauren Ramos’ son, Ryan, likes the “typical boy stuff” — ninjas, dinosaurs, Spider-Man. But when planning his 5th birthday party, the little boy wanted it to be all about his favorite U.S. president.

On Saturday, the New Jersey family celebrated Ryan, who proudly ate a Jimmy Carter-frosted cake and wore his “Carter for President” T-shirt at his Carter-themed birthday party. The festivities came with a Carter cardboard cutout and a personalized banner with images edited to depict a grinning Ryan and Carter standing side by side, both sporting coned birthday hats.

Can you put into words what that purpose is? You and the frog have really become icons of this protest.

There’s been a nice overall whimsy that has shown up. The frog is amazing. We had a bunch of other inflatable people here last night, too. I saw people playing Twister the other day.

What they rely on is fear. So by coming out in an absurdist manner, it speaks to them, to some extent, that we’re actually not that afraid.

It also dismantles their narrative a little bit. When they try to describe this situation as “war-torn,” it becomes much harder to take them seriously when they have to post a video saying [U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security] Kristi Noem is up on the balcony staring over the Antifa Army and it’s, like, eight journalists and five protesters and one of them is in a chicken suit.

The America we used to live in—the America we want to think we live in—is gone.

We’ll have to build again.

We want to think that the repeated, widespread abuse of basic rights by DHS; the DOJ actions against former officials like James Comey and John Bolton; the presence of 2020 election deniers across congressional and executive branch leaders; the unconstitutional dismantling of federal agencies; the consolidation of old and new media under leadership favorable to Trump; the use of lawsuits and executive branch power to intimidate and silence critics; and the clear attempts to subvert the 2026 and 2028 elections; and Trump's constant insinuation that he might seek a third term do not all in fact mean
that we have crossed the threshold into a competitive authoritarian environment.
But we have. We have passed through the veil. Whatever becomes of American liberal democracy in the near or distant future, it will be a resurrection and not a continuation.
