This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.
A photograph from the 1988 ACT UP demonstration outside the FDA. Many people are participating in a die-in on the front steps, holding mock tombstones with messages like "RIP - killed by the FDA" and "Dead from lack of drugs." A line of police officers (some with classic 80s mustaches) wearing riot helmets stands between them and the building; one cop wearing white gloves is walking through the demonstrators. Affixed to the 2nd story windows of the building is a series of posters and a large blank banner reading Silence = Death.

For more information about the Friday night massacre at CDC, I wrote up an analysis of who got terminated and what that means for public health.

Grateful to @saveamericamvmt.bsky.social for supporting and amplifying. We are in really terrible trouble.

The non-fascist states need to immediately band together and build a new CDC, hiring all those RFK Jr has fired and try to quickly reassemble the infrastructure he’s destroyed. I assure you we don’t want to live in a world without proper infectious disease tracking and prevention.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

The thing about health disinformation is that when it comes from the highest office, people believe it. Parents & pregnant women want to do the right thing but are now making health decisions based on fear.
This is causing real harm.
It's also making our jobs as healthcare professionals harder.

TONIGHT! I’m tabling at the first and then popping over to the second one! You can go to one, both, or neither, but you deserve the RIGHT to CHOOSE 😤

UPDATE: 25 states plus DC have taken actions to protect COVID-19 vaccine access.

Two regional public health alliances have formed: The Northeast Public Health Collaborative and the West Coast Health Alliance.

There are several midwest and mountain states who have collaboration potential.

Yes, 100%. Still really wild and unsettling. You are definitely under their skin, buddy!

Yes. Extremely. Did they write something about you?!

I've said this before, but I feel pretty strongly that the building of concentration camps - and now, the inevitable disappearance of 1,800 people from those camps - is the biggest story in American public health right now that isn't being treated like one

The normalization of the fascist anti-science, eugenicist platform is nauseating and devastating. And also, because I absolutely refuse to let this reality destroy my sense of humor, all this talk about the "cause of autism" makes me think of this classic KITH sketch: youtu.be/qN7be1ADhKI?...

Happy Musicophilia Friday! Tune in tonight from 10PM-12M CST as my buddy Spencer from local band Burnt Sugar joins me for an in-studio performance, interview, AND guest DJ set. Listen to some sweet poppy sounds as well as we discuss such topics as musical influences and performative masculinity. 🖤
A classic image of Euterpe, the Greek Muse of Delight/Music, in shades of turquoise and hot pink, is set against a black background. Above the image, in hot pink script is the word "Musicophilia", with the hot pink sub-heading "With DJ MB" below. Toward the bottom of the image, in turquoise text, are the words "2nd and 3rd Fridays, 10 PM - 12M CST, WTUL 91.5 FM, wtulneworleans.com."

i think the reason i find relatively well-heeled american people’s doomerism hard to bear is that it’s no less self important than evangelicals’ assertions that these just happen to be the end of days. and compared to people in e.g. the global south most of us ARE relatively well-heeled

My colleague @deecherrywriter.bsky.social has been reporting on this for @antigravitymag.bsky.social (with a more Louisiana focus).

I worry very much about what will happen as we descend into economic depression and frightening totalitarianism, surrounded by a toxic and contaminated drug supply.

People lean on drugs to ease pain and survive. If you’ve needed a cold beer after a bad shift, you get it.

Grocery store radio stations that still play The Wallflowers are keeping us all alive

Just walked into the grocery store and "One Headlight" was blasting over the speakers. @nikostratis.com is right, it is the perfect grocery store song (check out "The Dad Rock That Made Me A Woman").
