Goes back to the argument I made in the Guardian earlier this year that the world is in danger because the techbros have completely misunderstood a bunch of sci-fi and fantasy...

I don’t know how anyone can read this and think Gill is the only one implicated
bylinetimes.bsky.social
“Here Farage is, in Gill’s office, with Voloshyn’s wife Nadia, on the day Gill makes an intervention on behalf of Medvedchuk’s channels, with an employee of one of those channels, whose husband started bribing Gill to make these statements 6 days earlier”

'Stunned?' Farage's Admission He Knew Nathan Gill but Not His Kremlin Associates Does Not Stand Up to Scrutiny
Insiders have told Byline Times, it is 'inconceivable' the Reform Leader did not know about his close aide's pro Russian statements

Seriously? I thought it was a joke
missarbre.bsky.social
I think that’s not real and I think I know who made it

is all stick but no carrot

Youngest in Y8 went on 6th form open eve’s with older sibling and a uni outreach day with his sport club. It was a lightbulb moment for him and he sees himself quite differently since. His school has high expectations eg all the targets, reports, tracking. ie the pressure stuff but that
missarbre.bsky.social
I think focus should be on raising aspiration more than high expectation for exam passes.
Eg children from some backgrounds not taken on university visits until Y11 so not seeing themselves as uni material. I see 13yr old boys already writing themselves off as yeah that’s not me

What’s the point of things like food hygiene ratings and the smiley face stickers in the window if the food you order then comes from somewhere completely different

The STI one is GBH though in the context of HIV. Definitely not part and parcel of life.

There’s more men called Paul on there than there is women.

One year I will say something but not this year. I don’t have the energy for their stupid tick box smugness.

I hate mental health awareness day at work. Hate it. A Teams call where mentally well people tell other mentally well people to make sure they get outside for a walk at lunch time. Absolutely fuck that shit.

virtue signalling is when everyone tell you you’re wonderful is more important to you than the action itself. This isn’t that.

Would also appreciate if the news headlines were about the actual winner rather than a man who didn’t win.

The problem with class discussions is if the outcome is just more exposure to those extreme views
smolrobots.bsky.social
The problem is, we don't see what exposure to ideas does to us. The human brain is a machine for rationalising the irrational. It will tell you you're the same person you were a year ago no matter what you've been through. We all think - every single one of us - that we can't be manipulated.

The "follow" button confounds "I'm looking at your content" and "I endorse this content." We need two different ways to signal the difference between the two.

I think, just like adults, there will be a huge range. My own 16yr old is on the very informed and very interested end, but some of her friends really are not.
missarbre.bsky.social
When people say 16 year olds aren’t informed enough to vote, my response is to ask them how informed they think adults are

Like Wikipedia’s description of how to spot AI writing. Smoothing over stand-out details and regressing to a statistical likely mean with generic positive statements.

I teach a history of antifascism course @ruhistorydept.bsky.social and figured I'd start an ongoing thread this semester to share some insights from course readings and recommend some great works on antifascism.

Their ignorance helps explain why post pandemic, where everybody’s lives to protect the elderly, there has been no payback to the generation who suffered most ie children and teens
missarbre.bsky.social
Based on my survey of one family, they bore their children instead.
We eventually said ENOUGH!!!
So now they bore their MP instead and he gets long letters about why everything is wrong. Sorry not sorry.
