In the world of my WIP, the current understanding of astronomy is that while many stars in the sky move, a vast majority of them are absolutely still, century after century.

Something I loved about Earthsea is that it starts with wonder in everything, from the magic to the school... but then part of that wonder, the kind rooted in worshipping tradition as sacrosanct, gets rightly pulled away, yet the real wonder of the world remains not only undamaged, but enriched.

If there's any trait that characterizes right wingers most strongly, imo, it's a total inability to learn from a well-deserved loss. They simply will not take the L with grace, no matter how big or small the issue.

I like the approach to villains in Realm of the Elderlings, where they're basically all utterly *banal* once you get past their trappings, and all the more hateable and horrifying for it. Where our heroes are complex and grapple with their morality, the villains are straightforward, incurious...

...from that, a setting that supports that character's existence (What if he didn't like it because his people were horribly scarred by dragons and then killed them all?).

From there, other characters arise via being foils to aspects of that character and setting, and then to each other!
