Congress must take action and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act—an important step forward in stopping police brutality and gun violence. Honor Atatiana and all whose lives have been taken by senseless acts of police violence by adding your name: etwn.us/GFJIPACT_BS

Atatiana had a degree in biology and planned to go to medical school, but, like so many of her Black peers, that dream was stolen by a senseless act of police violence. In fact, Black Americans are almost three times more likely to be shot and killed by police than white Americans.

Today in 2019, 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson was playing video games with her nephew when a neighbor called a non-emergency number to report that her front door was open. A white police officer shot & killed Atatiana through her window while responding. The officer was found guilty of manslaughter.

Thank you @governor.ca.gov for signing a FIRST-in-the-nation gun safety bill to stop do-it-yourself machine guns, and shoutout to all of our California @momsdemand.bsky.social and @studentsdemand.bsky.social volunteers and survivors for your tireless advocacy for this victory! Now, let’s celebrate!

And to Governor Gavin Newsom—thank you for your leadership in signing AB 1127 into law and making sure California remains the national leader in gun violence prevention.
momsdemand.bsky.social
We’re especially proud of Assemblymembers Jesse Gabriel and Catherine Stefani who introduced the bill, and all who had the courage to lead on this critical legislation. You chose public safety over industry pressure. You showed that protecting our families comes first. @catherinestefani.bsky.social

This victory was powered by the grassroots:
💪 Nearly 135,000 messages and 2,400 calls were made by supporters to push this bill forward.
💪 Volunteers and survivors showed up at the Capitol and across the state to demand action—and it worked.

These dangerous weapons, often created by converting pistols with illegal switches, have no place in our communities. With AB 1127, California is fixing a deadly problem that the gun industry has ignored for too long.

📢 HISTORY MADE IN CALIFORNIA: Thanks to the tireless efforts of our volunteers, survivors, gun sense champions in the legislature, and Governor Gavin Newsom, California just made history by enacting AB 1127—a first-of-its-kind law to take on DIY machine guns. @governor.ca.gov 🧵

The presence of a gun can turn everyday disagreements into deadly acts of gun violence.

Our hearts are Cecilia Simpson’s loved ones as they come to terms with her senseless killing.

She was also a champion for gun violence prevention policies that make Iowa communities safer. Her leadership will be deeply missed.

Our hearts are with Senator Celsi’s loved ones and all impacted by her passing at this painful time.

We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Iowa state Senator Claire Celsi. As one of our first volunteers to step up to run for office in the name of gun safety, Senator Celsi helped inspire our Demand a Seat program, which trains our volunteers to build and run successful campaigns.

Now, she’s running for governor of New Jersey to continue that fight. With one of the lowest gun death rates in the country, New Jersey needs a proven leader who will build on that progress—not roll it back.

We’re proud to stand with Mikie Sherrill for governor.

@MikieSherrill is a veteran, a former prosecutor, and a mom—and she’s spent her entire career fighting to keep communities safe.

In Congress, she helped pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, expanding secure storage awareness, and working to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers.

“Hundreds of faith leaders from around the state delivered a letter to the governor on Wednesday urging him to call a special session. Dozens of them held a prayer service on the Capitol steps and said they’d continue putting pressure on every day for a week, or longer if necessary.”
In reversal, Walz says he needs deal with top lawmakers to call special session on guns
The statement Wednesday seemed to walk back prior comments the DFLer made about bringing lawmakers back to St. Paul with or without an agreement on a special session.

While Gov. Youngkin vetoed common-sense gun safety bills, Abigail will get them across the finish line, but she needs our help.

As a former CIA officer, federal law enforcement official, and Moms Demand Action volunteer, she knows what responsible gun ownership looks like. And as a former US representative, she’s proven that she’s ready to fight for laws that keep Virginians safe.

Ending gun violence isn’t a partisan issue—it’s an issue of public safety, and Virginia’s next governor, Abigail Spanberger, agrees. 🧵
