Methane makes up 48% of NZ's climate pollution. The Govt's grossly irresponsible announcement today that they will never have a price on methane, combined with their policies to increase the dairy herd, means that they have zero intention of meeting NZ Paris obligations.

The solutions proposed for New Zealand's (and virtually every other country's) problems are always like:
"We need to make people work for more years"
"We have to cut back on services, I'm sorry, there is just no other way"
"We have to cut benefits for young people"

never:
"We need to tax the rich"

It’s been brought to my attention that it’s World Migratory Bird Day. I can think of no better excuse to share four of my best pictures of the undisputed king of migratory birds - the kuaka (bar-tailed godwit), which boasts the longest non-stop migration on the planet. Alaska-Aotearoa. 🪶🇳🇿

Have arrived in Gwangju to honour those killed fighting for democracy in the 1980 uprising. Or, as the tourist map describes it, to experience the Root of Gwangju, the Righteous Hometown.

So his argument is that when people think of convicted fraudsters, names like Ponzi, Madoff and Lehman Brothers spring to mind so therefore Mr D Grant cannot be a convicted fraudster .....

We have a solution for this - political parties! They represent a rough set of values and policy directions, an internal vetting and selection system, and a reputational system that makes parties accountable for the candidates the choose (or throw out if they turn out to be shit).

Voters therefore have little choice but to make their choices based on the statements made by candidates in the booklet provided with their ballot paper. These statements are often pretty generic, give little real idea of candidates' ideology or beliefs, and are pretty tedious to read.

The writer notes that there's been a significant shift in attitudes since the coalition took power and Peters and Seymour stepped up their war on progressive thought.

Yes, but most of what they are doing can be undone by a future government. Not sure it will be possible to regain independence foreign policy

Marco De Jong helps shine further light on how intertwined NZ’s military is with the white supremacist military machine of the US, and how those links keep growing.

You may have heard Peters trying to make the situation with the abducted NZers all about him

They’ve been released and their flights home paid for by the people who love them

Unlike Peters, who has all his flights paid for by taxpayers

The Olive green areas are councils where citizens voted down Māori wards (the little blue blob in the middle is Kirikiriroa, which voted by a whisker to retain theirs).
Coincidentally those Olive green areas also pretty accurately represent land confiscated by the crown after the Waikato wars.

Ok after an afternoon of results, texts, calls, messages on other apps and emails, I have some thoughts on today’s Local Election results

1) Voter turnout is depressing. 32%ish on average across AoNZ is pathetic.
2) The Māori Wards referendum should never have happened - it was a racebaiting farce…

Central issues were a reasonable council having to create a new water entity (as required by central govt's "Local Water Done Well" policy) + costs of infrastructure development driving up rates. Let's see how the nutty right manages to deal with these issues over the next 3 years ... .

Well fuck - Selwyn has elected a majority of Council with links to VFF, Act, and Trump fans. Maybe put that on the no fly list for the next three years
