Haven't been able to make it to a bookshop myself today on National Bookshop Day but will try to boost the two near me.

The little bookshop in Chapel Allerton which has a focus on kids books but a very good adult section (not like that) in the back.

It's very curious as the states is the origin it seems of so much tech and innovation.
But so little of that seems to have filtered to day to day life.

Wonder if part of it is the geographical size plus so much been state specific preventing homogenisation?

First time going to the National Railway Museum and man what a fantastic place!
All had a great time, toddler got to ride the train in and out of York and could have spent hours in the wonderlab.

Remember a really good BBC documentary a few years back in Dubai.
A guy had moved there for the low income tax rate but wasn't free to say anything critical about the Sheikh when asked.
Bizzare the choices people make and the liberties they give up

Interesting to see, especially after Sam Freedman's informative column this week

Daily bunny no.3104 does not have a map
An intrepid bunny creeps through a labyrinth or dungeon, arranged in a grid like an old videogame. There is a snake and a skull in the bunny's path, as well as a spike pit. The bunny has a small sword.

People keep telling me the UK is so over and they're going to move to Dubai and, like, fine. Go on then. Would you like directions to the airport?

The only risk from this approach is that we never stop hear about that '70 Brexit benefits' books as people push it to combat this narrative.

This strikes me as a pretty major Brexit shift from Starmer.

Perhaps the beginning of 'Brexit is sh1t and has caused real economic damage'.

Steve Senior did an informative post a few days ago about the rationale from the JCVI and linked some of their notes.
Seems to be focused on number needed to avoid hospitalisation being quite high.
stevensenior.bsky.social
Bit nerdy, but it's worth having a skim over the number needed to vaccinate figures here. E.g. to avoid one hospitalisation in otherwise healthy people JCVI estimated 60-100k would need to be vaccinated (based on Autumn 2024 data).

Yeah that's the thing. In the end suppose need to see what labour can do over the next few years but everyone is just impatient for change and for things to get better.
Curious if feelings will change as events progress
For example if this peace holds and progresses will Gaza be as much of an issue?
oldmandoc.bsky.social
Oh yes those are both excellent! Especially the Nuffield one. That chart of when reform voters last voted labour was eye opening.

Tomorrow!

Bookshop Day!

You know what to do!!

(Go to a bookshop…)

(Buy book…)
drewgum.bsky.social
It’s bookshop day on 11th October. A day to celebrate your local bookshop.

You could even go totally bananas and buy my latest, Saltburn, which is about, after all, small businesses being assailed by big business. Well, that’s one thing it’s about…

booksaremybag.com/BookshopDay/...
The bookshop day poster. It asks you to choose bookshops:

Local jobs
Local economy
Local community
Real passion
Real people
Real conversations
Proper service
Perfect gifts
(and taxes paid!) The cover of Saltburn. Candy stripes coming from a picture of a seal sitting under a beach umbrella.
