Thoughts on the Andy Burnham decision.
In the end I think it's the right one because on balance it would be worse for Labour to lose control of the Manchester mayoralty then one seat in parliament.
The GM mayoralty is enacting real and positive change. -1 MP doesn't affect labours majority.

These deaths have been enabled and encouraged by there words and good to see the democratic party starting to say what's plain for all to see

There's a trend of Labour almost rans for acting like Britain has a Presidential system: David Miliband, Burnham, even Roy bloody Jenkins. Skipping out of Parliament, whatever you go and do, is usually a bad idea if you want to be a party leader or PM.

Andy Burnham must have had a bad feeling when he saw the NEC had 8 Freys and only 1 Tully on it
NEW: Andy Burnham *blocked* from standing in the Gorton and Denton byelection. Of nine voting members on NEC group was 8-1 against him.

You have to read this. Firsthand affidavit from one of the women who was there and recording the video. She talks about how Alex Pretti was directing traffic when she arrived. She watched him be killed in front of her. She's afraid to go home, worried she'll be arrested.

Confess I did a proper double take when seeing this at my local Waterstones.

Someone was clearly very happy getting that title out with the Heated Rivalry series

I think what the "blocking Burham looks petty" arg misses is that Labour NEC have a strong reason for blocking - Burnham would have to walk out on a Combined Authority Mayoral job he was elected to less than two years, triggering by far the largest by-election in British history
A few people have said to me/others in articles I’ve seen that it would be insane for Labour to block a Burnham return given how weak and petty it would make the leadership look.

Sure, but never underestimate the level of personal animosity towards AB at the top. Visceral to the point of obsession

Looking at the Burnham question for Labour it does seem like a no brainer for them to block him.
Will that get some bad headlines about them stopping him getting the leadership?
But if he becomes an MP every week will just be a constant chat about when will he mount a challenge a la Kemi/jenrick

I've finally finished Plur1bus and in between finding the energy to write other things I needed to come back to this to talk about the whole season but also to specifically talk about the nature of intelligence as described in the show. Specifically I wanted to talk about Plur1bus itself. I've been in a lot of conversations about the show and one thing I find myself alone in is the nature of the hivemind itself.

Organisations mentioned - from Natural History Museum to the BFI - are cultural powerhouses. It’s vital they’re supported and protected.

This decision was made in 2024, because we didn’t get around to prosecuting him until years after his presidency ended, long after the initial anger over Jan. 6 had faded, even among many non-Republicans. This probably affected the Supreme Court’s decision!
once SCOTUS made the decision to slow walk it, it was over, because the later things went the more costly it would have been for Republicans for Trump to be prosecuted.
I think the problem is that there was never an appeals-proof case, and you could not leave the fate of the republic up to SCOTUS, so time was more important than people gave it credit for.
