The only risk from this approach is that we never stop hear about that '70 Brexit benefits' books as people push it to combat this narrative.

This strikes me as a pretty major Brexit shift from Starmer.

Perhaps the beginning of 'Brexit is sh1t and has caused real economic damage'.

Steve Senior did an informative post a few days ago about the rationale from the JCVI and linked some of their notes.
Seems to be focused on number needed to avoid hospitalisation being quite high.
stevensenior.bsky.social
Bit nerdy, but it's worth having a skim over the number needed to vaccinate figures here. E.g. to avoid one hospitalisation in otherwise healthy people JCVI estimated 60-100k would need to be vaccinated (based on Autumn 2024 data).

Yeah that's the thing. In the end suppose need to see what labour can do over the next few years but everyone is just impatient for change and for things to get better.
Curious if feelings will change as events progress
For example if this peace holds and progresses will Gaza be as much of an issue?
oldmandoc.bsky.social
Oh yes those are both excellent! Especially the Nuffield one. That chart of when reform voters last voted labour was eye opening.

Tomorrow!

Bookshop Day!

You know what to do!!

(Go to a bookshop…)

(Buy book…)
drewgum.bsky.social
It’s bookshop day on 11th October. A day to celebrate your local bookshop.

You could even go totally bananas and buy my latest, Saltburn, which is about, after all, small businesses being assailed by big business. Well, that’s one thing it’s about…

booksaremybag.com/BookshopDay/...
The bookshop day poster. It asks you to choose bookshops:

Local jobs
Local economy
Local community
Real passion
Real people
Real conversations
Proper service
Perfect gifts
(and taxes paid!) The cover of Saltburn. Candy stripes coming from a picture of a seal sitting under a beach umbrella.

Surprising no-one, the Wyrd Science weekly roundup article is just as good as the magazine
wyrdscience.bsky.social
Put your feet up & skive your way through what remains of the working week with the Wyrd Science Gazetteer!

This week @emielboven.itch.io's DURF puts on some weight + loads of interesting stuff to check out, from Warhammer themed model railways through to a look at AD&D's horrific baby beaver trade
Slay To Find Out
In this week's Gazetteer, one of our favourite post-OSR games, DURF, gets expanded, Frogs cast a spell on you and what is better than Warhammer? Warhammer and model railways, obviously.

Also, looking at the original post by the MP. And the first two comments are you're cutting disability benefits ( which right now they're not) and that you're getting us involved in an illegal war (which I don't know what that's referring to)
Honestly might feel more productive to post on Facebook

What I'm wondering is how many of these green or lib Dem voters will be willing to turn back to Labour should it do a better job of governing/have improved things by 2029.
And also how many will be willing to vote tactically to keep our reform.
oldmandoc.bsky.social
Main worry is about this divide in the left(ish) opening the door to reform getting in via our voting system.

But next May's big elections have partially proportional systems- so more reason to vote with your heart not head in a way and to send a message to Labour about direction.
oldmandoc.bsky.social
Clear (as was form the start) that chasing reform vote was daft and doomed for labour.
Both in pushing core Labour voters away and trying to get voters back who it's clear mostly never want to vote Labour or Tory.

But big question is how the rise of lib Dems and greens works in FPTP
oldmandoc.bsky.social
Random weekly thought about politics (man I wish it was only weekly) on
Lib Dems and greens eating into Labour's coalition.
But feels good for the country to have two parties leaning to the left (the greens more so) to try and drag the governing party there way.
Compared to the last 10 years.

Also, I do bow to nobody in my disdain for The Donald, but if - this time next year - through his overtures there is anything approaching an equitable peace in both the Middle East and Ukraine, then he’d probably be a more worthy winner than quite a few in the history of the prize?

(I do not think the Nobel Prize Committee are “trolling Trump”, by the way. I think you are all reading across your own opinions and this is a committee of people acting out of - in their eyes - great moral seriousness, they wouldn’t be acting out of spite or malicious glee)

I was quite surprised, given the amount of negative press that would have you believe that this government is the worst we’ve had yet.

I’ll put the link in the next post but given we had a complete shit show with the Tories, this is astonishing. Do reshare or bookmark the link, it’s handy.
Under the last Tory Govt, elected in 2019, of 42 Manifesto Pledges, only
2 were delivered in 5 years.
Under the current Labour Govt, elected in 2024, of 83 Manifesto Pledges, 57 are delivered (18), on track (19), or in process (20).
In 1 year.
