If one person from a group does something bad there no exists a whole internet echo system that endlessly spreads the information to everyone else within the system and sadly that includes a lot of journalists and politicians.
I really think this is one of the biggest problems with online discourse. The libs of TikTok/ end Wokeness approach of just constantly bombarding you with individual anecdotes that make you feel threatened and at war.

It would not be unfair to worry that this government might not have thought deeply about comparative legal systems and might instead be going 'well France doesn't have juries, so we can save money there, don't need to check how that works' too, I will say.

I take to agree with this in general. The two huge risks are it being done in a panic because of a huge backlog and the fact that it seems to have dropped from the sky for most people and you really, really want them to have thought hard about the whats and whys of this.
I struggle with how much of the commentary which implies that our European neighbours are dreadful places ruled by judicial autocracy. But as @nwylabour.bsky.social says, it does not help that the government has done so little to build goodwill and has blundered on other 'reforms'.

My grandma was a magistrate for a few years when she retired and whilst I love her, I’m not sure she should have been sending people to prison.
oh Americans may not understand this, but a 'magistrate' in the UK is a local volunteer with typically no legal background. But it's ok, they receive about 10 days of training. And now they can send you to jail for two years without a jury!
