Welp, guess I need a pinned post. I write stuff, I have a Patreon, I edit freelance, and here's the thread about the time I started an antifascist hallway riot in the third grade. Raise a jelly nougat to Granddad!

Okay, so at the request of the lovely @trance.bsky.social , I'm going to tell a story about what happens when a shitty person is "just joking", and then discovers there are consequences.

AKA That Time Kat Started An Antifascist Hallway Riot In The Third Grade.

i feel like the people still talking about taking the high road need to be told that the high road was built on a mountain of bones, and that walking on dead people is disrespectful, so get back down here with the rest of us goddamnit.

Also worth noting that republicans always seem to be able to find a way to force their will on everyone when they aren't the majority party. It's time to start using their playbook and stop with the "high road" bullshit. People's lives are at stake.

Why is my neighborhood exploding tonight? We've had three random booms and I have not been informed of any ICE activity.
onbearfeet.bsky.social
Moral of the story: there are benefits to being publicly clockable as a non-shithead. I may have just made my mom a friend.
onbearfeet.bsky.social
...eavesdropping distance of the girl. She'd heard a random white-passing adult telling her conservative-looking, white-passing mother about protest plans, and the mother had approved.

A brown girl in a hijab had just heard two white strangers talking about standing up for her.
onbearfeet.bsky.social
I had to turn around to get out of the neighborhood, so I passed the girl twice as I left. The second time, I was closer, and her loop had her facing the street, so I waved again.

This time, her face lit up and she waved excitedly.

It was then that I realized Mom and I had been within ...
onbearfeet.bsky.social
Mom agreed that she'd check, and named another day that would probably work. She said she would still worry, but she was proud of me for going. I gave her a hug and promised to be careful. I got in my car and started up as Mom walked back to the house. The girl in the hijab kept skating in circles.
onbearfeet.bsky.social
I chatted back to Mom, and then asked if she could check her calendar for something. On one of our upcoming usual hangout days, I said, I had been invited to a protest. A large, SAFE protest, I emphasized, because she worries. Could we move our hangout to another day so I could do both?
onbearfeet.bsky.social
After I took her home, she walked me to my car, chatting happily about what a good day she had. On a nearby driveway, a teenage girl in a hijab skated in circles on rollerblades. I didn't know her name, but I waved. She waved back. The house had one of those "In This House We Believe" signs.
onbearfeet.bsky.social
I drove her to a quilt show in a place far enough away that she didn't feel safe driving herself. We saw quilts, met other nice old ladies, & had a lovely time. On the way back, we dropped off dinner for my bff (her "bonus daughter"), who just had surgery, & her family. So Mom got grandma time too.
onbearfeet.bsky.social
A little story.

I spend at least one day per week with my 80yo mom, who lives as my dad's full-time caregiver in the house they've owned for 30 years. She doesn't get out much anymore. I am, by myself, like 75% of her social life. The other 25% is church.

Today, though, we had Adventures.

Well, I doubt Neil’s going to be any help here, or that he would be even if he were to try, what with his current, eh, reputational irregularities.

Still, Whovians might be interested nonetheless.

Hello Mr. Gaiman,
You may remember me, I am the cabinet maker who built the "221b Baker Street TARDIS" for you.
I could use your help.
I lost my workshop in Wales. If you could share this fundraiser, it would mean the world to me.

Reading this anecdote and begging, BEGGING people who are not in creative fields to wrap their brains around the fact that figuring one's way through those stuck transitions *IS THE FUN PART*.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

It's critical! And apparently not common! I've had to repeatedly explain to people that it's easier for everyone if they just tell me what they want changed in a piece bc I'll probably do 95% of it without so much as a follow-up question. It's the one thing I DON'T have an anxiety disorder about!

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.
