A 120-year-old map might not seem to have much of a connection to someone alive today, but what it portrays may still be there, in a new purpose or as a solid monument to much older times.
The lines on the page can evoke lost family or friends.

#31DaysOfGraves day 10 urn. The Learmonth family grave at Osmondwall (Ousna), South Walls #Orkney. They were from the Lyness area in my #OnePlaceStudy #NorthWallsAndBrims but there was no kirkyard there until the later 1910s. (Top cut off due to focus on inscription.🤦🏻)
White painted gravestone with a draped urn on top in a grassy kirkyard with wooden gate and stone wall in the background. Inscription on gravestone reads: Erected in loving memory of Margaret Robertson wife of Henry Learmonth who died 26th March 1914 aged 68 years. Also their children William Henry who died 18th May 1878 aged 7 years, Margaret Jane who died 14th June aged 18 years, and the above Henry Learmonth who died 7th March 1921 aged 78 years.

Have hit the limits of both sites now - if anyone knows where I might find issues of the Irish Times from 1946 and 1948-50 without buying a full newspaper subscription, please let me know. (The Internet Archive has nothing after 1945, and FmP/BNA has 1947 but nothing else in the 1940s).

Hurrah for the Internet Archive plugging some of the gaps in the BNA's / FindMyPast's run of the Irish Times. Started the day frustrated that some of the articles I was looking for weren't available on FmP, but have now found them (and more) in the Internet Archive 🎉. #IrishGenealogy

History isn’t just about who was in power, it is also about who were the people. If our focus is solely on who was at the top and what was happening in the palaces, stately homes and Houses of Parliament, we miss the stories of everyone else. And ‘everyone else’ was the majority of the population.

In 1872, Redland Court (built in 1732) was the scene of a daylight robbery when burglars used a ladder to enter an upstairs room as homeowner George O. Edwards and his family dined downstairs.
The thieves took only a few items but the crime made headlines across the country.
