Those of us of a certain age will point out that the Plantagenet dynasty was saved by the septuagenarian William Marshall getting behind the nine year old Henry III and defeating the French.

Having the cycle parking at least half at ground level would have been cheaper than lifts. The upper deck could have been accessed by ramp.

The Paris study’s findings show that targeted cycling policies, such as building dedicated lanes and improving bike parking, were major contributors to the rise in ridership. But equally important were measures that discouraged car use.

This is such a smart way to handle bike lanes next to bus stops. Much safer for a pedestrian to have to cross a bike lane than for a cyclist to cross a bus lane - as we so often do.

This billboard misses the point entirely.

We should be designing cities where adding 15,000 new neighbors doesn't automatically mean adding 15,000 more cars. The goal is to build places so good that people are freed from the necessity of driving.
Stage is set for a vote on a tense zoning fight that involves the North Side's Broadway
As charges of NIMBY-style narrow-mindedness fly about, Edgewater's alderperson is pressing for zoning changes she says can promote neighborhood vitality.

For clarification the temple was originally built by Agrippa. The dome is Hadrianic.

Some nice details but a totally flawed design.

I did try the bike channels ignoring the notices as to which side to use.
Not easy.
Maybe in a few years they will put a gentle ramp along the long side .

Now we just need AI to be able to recognise bike theft, sound an alarm and lock the doors.

Than now - whenever that is.

“We assume that car use is an incompressible liquid that must be routed somewhere. But it’s more more like a gas that fills whatever space it is given.”

Before (2012) / After (2025) Rue le Vau, Paris 20. The change here is so radical that perceiving the photos as aligned is difficult (see the orange building and the trees on the left). In 2024, this section was converted into a school street with a bike lane running through the greenery.

So why does that create a low car community ?
paulluton.bsky.social
How so ? EVs might well be cheaper to run so actually encourage more driving.

On the plus side - we have a new capacious cycle parking hub at Richmond Station. On the minus - most cycle parking is up one or two flights of steps in order to minimise loss of car parking. A bit of green wall .

“In London cyclists now outnumber cars in the City by 2 to 1. Paris, where they now outnumber motorists across the whole city, is catching up with Europe’s traditional bike capitals, Amsterdam & Copenhagen…In Copenhagen, bikes account for almost half of commuter trips to work/school.” @economist.com

How to design safer intersections:

1. Near-sided signals. Placed before the bike/ped crossing, they prevent drivers from creeping into the path.

2. Pavement differentiation. High-contrast, colored crossings (like this red asphalt) clearly establish priority and command driver attention.

The standard for advocacy has to be higher than just saying "streets are dangerous".

We need to be the ones who can explain why a design like this is safe and then demand it. That's the real work that gets good projects built and I'd like to see more safe streets advocates learn more about design.

Sometimes we need a moment, but if you tune out completely, they win. Fascism doesn’t need your support, just your silence.

You do studies to test if your theory is wrong.
If, after lots of studies , you can't prove it wrong it is provisionally reliable.

Suspect that the reality is Labour Panic Easily.
The supreme court interpretation of the ambiguous equality act could have been changed by a short bill clarifying the act but that would have required the government to be actively pro trans rights and what would the Red Wall think ?

The BBC's justification for platforming Farage beyond the actual significance of his small parliamentary party are his polls. A rather cynical explanation, for he wouldn't be where he is without the constant, uncritical appearances he's given on the BBC. It's a (literally) vicious circle.
