Missed this article at the time but a lovely read about JDB's favourite pub.

That's what happens when you let a 96 year old drive a train.

Sadly this is an escalator in Liverpool One. The main street is an absolute death trap of them.

I know they are earning a pittance and are working on the clock but this dickhead actually hit me a glancing blow then blocked the bloody escalator. Absolute menace to those less steady on their feet.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

Hard agree. Not a pub, nor even an area of London I visited in my capital residing year but Will has a way with words that makes you immediately feel at home in the venues he writes about. Watching the documentary mentioned within right now, great piece of social history.

Every time I come across this photo it completely stops me in my tracks. Crude oil supertanker Esso Hibernia under construction at Swan Hunter shipyard, Wallsend, during 1970. The scale and spectacle of this thing is incomprehensible. (📸 Harriet Berney)
Black and white photo looking down a street of terraced brick houses. Several cars line each side of the street, with many people gathered at the far end. Beyond this the bow of a large oil tanker can be seen, towering above the end of the street and the rows of houses.
