Just some guy, I think. Snark, tech, cooking, greyhounds, TTRPGs. Usually some politics too. I’m a privacy engineer at a big tech firm but I’m not here for work so these hot takes are nothing to do with my employer and are all my own. He/him.

having spoken to him in real life, i'm pretty sure he's forgotten more about machine learning, discrete maths, and various related fields than i'm ever gonna know

and I have a phd in metaheuristics, while he has a law degree

i am going to try to give a framework of my own understanding which laypeople can understand.

yeah - I was impressed by the token-prediction as being as powerful as it is, but there's more going on than that and I don't really follow it any more.

This is the automation paradox; above a certain level of accuracy, "automation system + human" often starts to return worse results than just the human alone. The humans get lazy about the double-checking. It's well-studied in a number of fields but particularly in aviation, for obvious reasons.

I miss him still. His warmth and joy.

A screenshot of hhs.gov. A massive bright red box in the centre of the screen reads

"Mission-critical activities of HHS will continue during the Democrat-led government shutdown. Please use this site as a resource as the Trump Administration works to reopen the government for the American people."

this was a brief flirtation with emacs; I was already a pretty solidly convinced vim user before this

but it was the last time I ever used emacs, yes!

An image of a shelf full of Shadworun 2e sourcebooks. In the front of the frame, I am holding a stupidly battered copy of the core rulebook, held together entirely with Sellotape.

Margaret Thatcher was born on this day 100 years ago and if she were alive today I'd like to think she'd be saying "oh God why am I in this box and why have I been here for so many years and little spurts of urine keep squeezing through the box from up above, this is worse than being in a mine"

As a Shadowrun fan for nearly as long as it has existed: yes, yes, a thousand times yes. True Shadowrun fanboyism is when you know each edition sucks but will die defending the one you believe sucks least.

Even more stupid: I still unthinkingly put -rf on all my rm commands, even when it's not needed. You'd think I might have learned. Nope.

The heavy shadow on Veidt's face has always reminded me of streaks of tears here. I realise it's not tears, but I do wonder if Gibbons drew it that way to create the association in reader's minds. Veidt looks drawn and haggard.

I was once waiting for my undergrad dissertation to print with minutes to spare before the submission deadline. Full of nervous energy, while the ancient inkjet spluttered and whined, I cleaned up my Emacs backup files, that had an appended tilde. I typed:

rm -rf .~

(you may already be shouting)

I had to drag the PostScript file out of the print spooler's queue to rescue it, and re-do the print job. I made the submission deadline 30 min late (but joined the back of the very long queue so nobody ever knew, shhhh) and then had a very fun afternoon learning about ext2fs undelete.

A few minutes later I thought "hey why is my HDD churning so much"

readers, I had typed

rm -rf . ~

Also the print job failed. And the first directory it wiped out was the one with my dissertation's LaTeX source in.
