Work begins on phase 6 of #RoyalDocksCorridor, a Brucie bonus that will finally connect City Hall & housing in the area to the Cycleway network, and fix the awful wait times for people crossing to the DLR. 🎉 @rokhsanafiaz.bsky.social @plaistovian.bsky.social www.newham.gov.uk/transport-st...
A wonderful autumn day to be out on the #doorstep in Plaistow West and Canning Town East this morning. Warm responses from residents towards @newham_labour! 🌹

Cars account for just 4.3% of journeys in Paris. So motorists may be 'living in fear' (although that sounds unlikely) but the vast majority of Parisians, far from seeing red, are pretty happy with expanded space for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users

NEW: London has achieved the historic milestone of meeting the legal limits for nitrogen dioxide for the first time in 2024 - 184 years earlier than experts predicted.
The gains also have wider public health and social justice implications. Communities in more deprived areas, who have long borne the brunt of poor air quality, are now among those experiencing the greatest improvements.
The results show that the policy is having a marked effect: transport emissions are falling, vehicle fleets are becoming cleaner, and the air quality benefits are being felt even in outer boroughs.
Policies originally expected to take many decades to deliver change are instead achieving dramatic improvements within only a few years. Experts argue that London may now reach its legally required pollution targets decades ahead of schedule.
For decades, London has struggled with dirty air, particularly from road traffic and domestic burning. Much of the public discussion around pollution has focused on nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) and fine particulates (PM₂.₅), which are linked to respiratory diseases, heart problems, and premature death.
This achievement marks a turning point in the capital’s environmental and public health policy, with significant reductions recorded in nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), fine particulates (PM₂.₅), and other vehicle-related emissions.
London has reached a watershed moment in its long-running battle with air pollution: for the first time in decades, evidence suggests that all Londoners are now breathing cleaner air, thanks largely to the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

Plus remote controlled bobcat!
Looking forward to seeing how the Royal Docks Corridor will continue to shape opportunity and connectivity in Newham.
Delighted to have attended Newham Council’s Royal Docks Corridor celebration.

The event was a great example of how infrastructure projects can bring communities together—full of interactive activities, energy, and even some digger-tastic fun! 🚜
A huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing this vision to life. The Royal Docks Corridor is now open – and ready to be enjoyed by everyone.
The feedback already speaks volumes – from residents describing the changes as transformational to recognition from cycling networks as one of the best new routes in London.

With Phase 6 at Western Gateway due to start in 2026, this is just the beginning of the journey.
This project is a real example of what can be achieved through long-term ambition, strong partnerships, and listening to the community. Funded through contributions from development and major support from the GLA, it has turned a £60m concept into a £35m delivered scheme.
What was once a corridor dominated by heavy vehicle traffic has been transformed into a welcoming, climate-resilient public space, with:
🚶 Safer crossings and pedestrian-friendly routes
🚴 A high-quality segregated cycleway
🌳 Tens of thousands of new trees, planting and SUDS
Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending and speaking at the official opening of the Royal Docks Corridor – a milestone moment for Newham, London, and everyone who walks, wheels, cycles, or simply enjoys safer, greener streets.

Pedestrianizing a main street spine in central Reykjavík was controversial with businesses when it was first done, so they made it a summer pilot. They kept it that way, a pilot, for over a decade, and then went ahead and made it year-round and permanent. No big deal. No controversy. People like it.
