I was on a panel last year evaluating book proposals/grant applications in the American history segment of the NEH's public scholar program. I read and recommended support of some superb book ideas. Worried the program will be ended by Tr*mp+M*sk. #PublishingIn2025 #NonFiction #Grants #Reading

This is a huge scandal, one of the worst in modern law enforcement and something that is astoundingly unconstitutional and illegal.
Ed Simon is one of my favorite commentators on gothic topics. The Poe essay below is excellent, as is a current piece on Faustian bargains in American life and politics. #Faust www.themontrealreview.com/Articles/Fau...

This is what I've had the privilege to watch happening in Chicago:

A genuine social moment, so new and spontaneous (though not without antecedents and seedbeds) it doesn't even yet have a theory or "ideology." Just: people doing....

Q: Politico reported on a group chat of young Republicans. Does this just reflect some bad apples?

HOCHUL: Some bad apples? These are the future of the GOP. This is so vile it's hard to find the words to put into context ... there's gotta be consequences ... this bullshit has to stop.
Great convo w/CBC host Elamin Abdelmahmoud about John Candy w/ @vishkhanna.bsky.social, Teri Hart, and Candy biographer Paul Meyers. I loved Vish's comment abt "the dad-sized hole in John Candy's life." My fave John Candy scene is when he play Babe Ruth who's asked to hit a home run for a sick kid.
I'm eager to read One of Us. I just finished his 2017 novel Ill Will, which I found quite engrossing. I also liked Sleepwalk very much.

we’ll see how his mayoral tenure shakes out but i am convinced that Mamdani has the juice. not just the charisma to win an election but the temperament to govern and the measured pragmatism of someone who genuinely believes what they’re saying and wants to accomplish real things.

The is literally nothing more American and patriotic than declaring: No Kings.

this is an incredibly ominous beginning to a future with a largely carved out federal emergency response system
NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

It's time again as a notable Italian-American to note Christopher Columbus was an absolute piece of shit human who didn't land anywhere near this actual country so why the fuck should he stop the mail for the whole day

Anyway, Happy Indigenous People's Day, y'all

Big colorful graphic of Zohran smiling that says, "Our Time Has Come: Rally Tonight" and a list of speakers.
Correction: Ill Will is not Dan Chaon’s first novel.

Still can’t operate an umbrella, I see.
Trump gets some help closing his umbrella while boarding Air Force One
Just finished Ill Will, Dan Chaon’s first novel, largely set in Cleveland. Pretty compelling, even though its execution doesn’t fully match its ambition. I had very much dug his 2022 novel Sleepwalk, and want to read his latest, One of Us, a carny novel.

Has lived in the US since he was NINE MONTHS OLD.
After spending 43 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, evidence hidden by the prosecution reversed his conviction. Rather than finally enjoying freedom, ICE abducted him for deportation

Depraved.

Ooh, I'm putting this Yale exhibit on my go-to list. Here are images of a small Blake engraving I own.
