Arthur Dent sat and quivered. He had no idea what he was in for, but he knew that he hadn't liked any thing that had happened so far and didn't think things were likely to change.

This is Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron and considered to be the first person to write a computer programme which was for Babbage's Analytical Machine. She died in 1842
In her honour, today is Ada Lovelace Day and is all about encouraging women and girls in mathematics, science and engineering.

Dani watches The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. The main image is a montage and of people and things from the BBC TV adaptation of The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (1981). In the centre is a disgusted/perteberd man wearing a dressing gown over pyjamas - this is Arthur Dent (played by Simon Jones). Beneath him are written the words: This is of course impossible. Surrounding him are: a yellow fish - the Babel Fish, an animal's head on a platter with an apple in it's mouth - this is the Dish of the Day, a tablet-like device - the titular Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (on it's screen are the words: Don't Panic!), and mouse, a weird-shaped glass with an exotic drink - this is a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster (which drinking it is like having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a gold brick), a neon sign for 'Milliways' (The Restaurant at the End of the Universe), a multi-armed alien - a Jatravartid holding a few deodorant spray cans, the logo of Disaster Area - generally regarded as not only the loudest rock band in the Galaxy, but also the loudest noise of any kind at all, a mathematical symbol for infinity(?), two fried eggs on slices of bread, a roughly humanoid-shaped robot - Marvin the Paranoid Android (who has a brain the size of a planet - thinking down to our level gives him a headache!), a squadron of red, and green arrows in formation representing space fleets of the G'Guvuntts, and the Vl'Hurgs, the words 'forty' and 'two' in circluar/wooden tiles laid out like Scrabble, a sperm whale, and a pie-chart split into 3 equal looking sections: Thinkers, Doers, Middle Men. Finally, in large, friendly, pink letters: Don't Panic in the background of it all!

The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."
