Right?! The pile of shorts and flannels simultaneously occupying my laundry bin makes it look like I'm back in my grunge era.

The weather has been a little... extreme... this week in upstate NY.

It really is! Fun fact: If you juxtapose the CYOA book's cover with the original cover of Lovecraft's book, the CYOA art puts the reader into the PoV of the characters in the original cover, essentially.

When I received an email about a local author's "Choose Your Own Adventure story based on H.P. Lovecraft's 'At the Mountains of Madness'" I knew I had to talk to the writer. The book is available now & you can read the article here or in today's print edition of @timesunion.com. #hplovecraft

Closing out another summer...

Carved out a few hours today to see "One Battle After Another." It somehow manages to be excruciatingly tense, funny, insightful, timely, and generally deserving of all the praise it's receiving. Great stuff. See it. boxd.it/DUHM

I've been meaning to give the first volume of Alpha Flight a serious read/re-reread, but it's been difficult to find an accessible collection. Saving this post so I can read this after I finish the volume! The search continues!

From the Dept. of Take Your Victories When They Swim Into View: It's encouraging that not a single news org agreed to this bullshit policy.

I've got Halloween items back in stock! PLUS new earrings, opossum stickers and snail pins! www.etsy.com/shop/Jessica...
A photo of a snail brooch on a grassy background. The snail is hand sculpted out of teal colored semi-translucent polymer clay. The shell is real, it is white and has a crack at it's center from which two tiny tan and white mushrooms are sprouting. The mushrooms are also made of polymer clay. A photo of a sticker of an opossum. The sticker is about 3 inches wide and depicts a happy opossum riding a skateboard and wearing sunglasses. The text underneath reads "Too cool for rabies". The background of the sticker is holographic rainbow foil. A photo of a sticker held by the artist. The sticker depicts a happy opossum mamma surrounded by hearts, with a happy baby opossum dangling from her tail. The text at the bottom reads NORTH AMERICA'S ONLY MARSUPIAL! A photo of two pumpkin earrings. The pumpkin is cut in half along it's middle, with the top of it's "head" swiveled right and the bottom swiveled left. The jack-o-lantern face looks confused and concerned. The color is bright orange with bright yellow highlights where the eyes and mouth are cut out.

I do the same! Every third or fourth book tends to focus on something I want to learn more about, basically. This one's a relatively short, very digestible exploration of the role grammar plays in our lives. Good luck with that TBR pile!

My 47th (!!) book of 2025 - which has been a record year for me as a book reader/listener - is one for the word nerds. I'm enjoying it so far!

My pet conspiracy theory:

Saudi Arabia doesn't give a shit about EA beyond its leverage into the NFL, the crown jewel of American sports. SA can't create a new league, LIV-style. But EA's monopolistic contracts with sports leagues like the NFL give SA a powerful position for further acquisitions

Read the capper to the Times Union editorial board's weeklong series on imminent dangers to the First Amendment, then go back and read the previous four pieces.

This was a fun one to write up for this year's "Upstate Traveler" special issue (out soon). (Oh, and fwiw, I have long believed that Altamont, NY, feels like our very own Stars Hollow.)

You can find info on many of the Rocky Horror events happening around the region this year in the article above. And if you're outside the region, JFGI and search for an event near you. They're happening, I assure you. Go on that strange journey. You'll be glad you did. #RockyHorror

Ended up sitting in the front row, which meant I was not only pelted by rice, toast and toilet paper, but had Riff-Raff and other cast members *in my lap* at various points. It was wild, a little surreal, and so much unfiltered fun. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs a joy refill. (More...)

We get to the theater & walk in, only to have the group push me to the front & start shouting & pointing at me: "HE'S A VIRGIN!" (The term for RHPS first-timers, I learned.) Next thing I know I'm being paddled by the Riff-Raff actor on stage in front of hundreds of strangers.

A story: I worked at an insurance co. just after college. Some coworkers invited me to join them for a Rocky Horror show. I had ZERO experience w/ this. Met them at an IT guy's apt & was greeted by a group of them in full costume - incl. the IT guy in full Frank-N-Furter fishnets & corset. (More...)
