“I never thought I’d make a film in America where we’d have to roll with bulletproof vests and gas masks and helmets as a standard part of our equipment list,” said Premo of capturing the Jan. 6 footage seen in “Homegrown."
I talked to Albany-raised filmmaker @michaelpremo.bsky.social about "Homegrown," his doc on right-wing activists that began on 2020 campaign trail & led to the middle of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. It's avail. to stream now, but for some reason (??), big US distributors haven't picked it up.

Just a reminder, the greatest living American historian filmmaker, Ken Burns, released a 720 min exploration of every facet of the American revolution using zero generative AI and paying for all of its assets instead of cobbling it from stolen data, then he gave it away for free on PBS this year.
First trailer for Darren Aranofsky's new AI animated series 'On This Day... 1776'

• Tells short narrative stories about the Revolutionary War

• Uses Gen AI tools, including tech made by Google DeepMind

• Has SAG voice actors

In a more ideal world, this would be Yo-Yo Ma and Weird Al performing *together* ... but this is pretty okay, too, I guess. (Hey @alyankovic.bsky.social, you can make that happen, right?)

"Slopagandist" it is. I like it. Add it to the style book. Alert @merriam-webster.com.

Well done.
The violent occupation of Minneapolis started with a vlog. I've wanted to find a framework to describe Nick Shirley & others like him: "Influencer" is too quaint. "Journalist" is obviously wrong.

I landed on "slopagandist."

So, I'm going to go out on a limb here and speculate that an impending "BOMB CYCLONE" isn't a good thing if you have plans this weekend.
A ‘bomb cyclone’ could send another powerful storm up the East Coast. Here’s what to expect.
The coastal storm is still taking shape but seems likely to be designated a “bomb cyclone.”

After being held in two of them as a boy, I fought for decades urging America to never again build concentration camps and put human beings in them. It breaks my heart to watch this happen twice now in my own lifetime.

Barry Manilow fans in the region, you have one last chance to see him perform locally (and/or raid his wardrobe, if you're Shermer HS Principal Richard Vernon, per John Bender).

I enjoy when the TU's digital team feels compelled to create ridiculous personality quizzes. In case you're wondering, I am a tie between "fun outdoors day" and "Hallmark movie upstate winter day," which feels accurate.

It's always exciting to get more of a good thing in the local arts scene, especially right now, when it feels like everything creative and enriching is under attack. Looking forward to seeing great things in the Spa Little Theater when it reopens.
