The thing about crashing a tank through a museum of antiquities is that you don't have to be a particularly skilled driver to do a lot of damage.

It's difficult at times to hold both "this admin is doing lasting and serious damage to our institutions and the globe" and "this admin is full of the most bafflingly incompetent idiots you've ever seen who fall over themselves like a Vaudeville act constantly."

The duality of man is incredible.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

For the record, literally zero people believe in unitary executive theory.

Some people believe in unitary Republican executive theory but that’s absolutely not the same thing.

Deskilling is real.

This is the world generative AI peddlers long for, one where people are incompetent without their service.

Don't outsource your brain to this shit. You'll regret it.

Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

We "deradicalised" Germany & Japan by spending billions of dollars turning them into functioning liberal democracies & returning them to sovereign membership of the international community. Not by building a Trump Tower on their children's graves.

This from the editorial board is one of the most deranged things I’ve read in the New York Times and that’s saying something.
The multinational authority should have an ambitious agenda. It would span the restoration of basic services, the feeding of the population, the reconstruction of neighborhoods and the creation of a police force.
Crucially, as experts at the Wilson Center in Washington have argued, this authority should create a program in schools, the media and elsewhere "to remove Hamas's pervasive radicalizing influence over Gazan society." Another task would be disarming any Hamas fighters who keep fighting. Qatar, given its longtime relationship with Hamas, can help pressure the group, much as the United States can pressure Israel.
There are historical antecedents for an international mission along these lines. Deradicalization programs succeeded in Germany and Japan after World War II, anc multinational police forces have operated in Bosnia, Kosovo, Haiti and elsewhere. Of course, these efforts come with dangers. Participating countries would risk having their personnel become targets for Hamas. But

"Now, uh, just one more thing, uh, Admiral Motti, sir. You say that any attack on this station would be a useless gesture. I get that. You say it's now the ultimate power in the universe. Isn't that something? But my wife, sir, my wife has been really into exhaust ports lately. She's always going on about small thermal exhaust ports. Small ones. And you, uh, you have such an exhaust port on your station, don't you, admiral? Just a small one?" (Image: Peter Falk as Lt. Columbo)

I mean yes this is funny, but the fact that these unconstitutional stormtroopers are so directionless that they literally stand around waiting for random nonwhite delivery guys to bike past them is just pathetic. No mandate, no mission, no clue. Just racism.

The fact that Kaleb Horton died begging for work instead having a column at some hip legacy mag is such an indictment of this industry. People should have been begging to put him on payroll. But nope, we've reserved that space for Ezra Klein
