I've tried outlining and getting detailed plans upfront for years, and outside of some short stories, I could never make things work because I'd spend all my time planning. With my latest work, I've been giving myself permission to not only pants it, but not need any plan; it keeps working.

But the community cares for everyone, she grows up without serious unmet needs or becoming parentified, and she finds joyful meaning in the things her life gives her, a life lived with and for others. She wouldn’t trade her childhood for any number of kisses.

I might have phrased that badly: she learns early on how good it feels to have someone kiss a freshly-forming bruise, and becomes devoted to her people without fear of injury because injury will lead to something she enjoys more than she’ll ever fear pain.

Her mum is negligent after her da’s death…

Her first priority is everyone's safety. Gang member, Order devotee or completely unaligned, everyone is part of "her people". This is a responsibility she feels keenly, and requires her to learn endlessly about history, philosophy and everything in between. She WILL fight. But she MUST protect.

While Claire loves kisses placed on (not-normally) tender spots, her sense of justice drives her to take care of the most vulnerable. The role of Protector also means more than fighting: sometimes it's moving house with a disabled person, or guiding a foreigner to the pharmacist...

Claire LeChartre starts out as a little girl with a strong sense of justice whose fear of injury is literally beaten and then kissed out of her as a child. She takes the role of Protector, fighting (and bluffing or parleying) to protect all in her city, especially the unaligned.

I kept forgetting to name Claire for so long, it's now kind of a running gag that nobody refers to her by name, and gave rise to Claire's entire family never saying each others' names.

They all have names, it's just canon now that her family never use them for family members.

Yeah... Like, I know there will never be a reason to feel bad for King Trash and his daughter whose name is an expletive, but they really do make Rising of the Shield Hero a little bit more enjoyable for how things progress. 😅
