At the time, I didn’t want a diagnosis even if there was one. I wasn’t open to medication and I don’t want you to ask me what I think. I know what I think.

It took me probably 2-3 years to find her.

It was a nice convo and I know not all therapists would be open to being questioned but I told her upfront, I can’t have a therapist that I have to explain it defend my faith, family identity/structures to.

And I asked could she challenge me. I told her what I didn’t want too lol,

Sure! I asked about her training and approach. Was it diagnosis-led or more exploratory? She talked about the different types of therapy and what she thought was suitable.

I asked her about her views on religion, politics and race.

I also asked her about how she conducted sessions.

This is the D'Angelo performance that I've never forgotten. This song was already a huge hit but the way he took it from contemporary R&B to church revival illustrated how connected those idioms are. A revelation for those who didn't know, and an affirmation for those who did.

I’ll also say that self awareness is often a mask of self-criticism. And hyper criticism is not an accurate reflection of one’s self.

I thought I was being self-evaluative and introspective.

Therapy has held me accountable to being kinder to myself.

And there is of course more self discovery

There are different therapy theories & approaches. I sought a particular type of therapist who I interviewed for the role.

I didn’t need a thought partner. I needed someone to challenge my beliefs, provide techniques to increase my quality of life, to illuminate new patterns.

She has done that.

Why is someone, in the year of our lord asking why people don’t seek medical care?

Is medical care free?

Well then that’s your answer; all other reasons are secondary.

It’s expensive and most Americans delay seeking care for fear of medical debt.

What things are you still trying work on to close out this year and what are you trying to accomplish for next year?

I'm still trying to stop procrastinating lol.

For next year: saving more money, taking a trip or two and publishing my novels.
