Y'know, when people have asked me about my dream game, I've always said a runaway slave + Underground Railroad project or something set in or around the Haitian Revolution.

Someone somewhere is already taking this on and infusing the work with all the courage that the subject matter deserves.

They also asked themselves if they could deal with public "backlash" and said no, which Black entertainers also deal with every day. Unlike Black entertainers, they think they can pick or choose profit or pain.

"Can we sell black characters in this political climate?" That is what Ubisoft asked itself and then answered, "No." Which is a skill issue and bigotry on THEIR part because black entertainers are out here selling their wares EVERY DAMN DAY, antiblackness be damned. Our culture MOVES NUMBERS.

#Comics folks, I need you to pull up to this one.

The world sucks right now, and we have the opportunity to do a little bit of good for a displaced and marginalized member of our community. Please join me in supporting this KS campaign!

www.kickstarter.com/projects/den...
If you're somebody who values supporting marginalized voices in comics, here's your chance to put your money where your values are!

The writer of this RINGO NOM’D INDIE COMIC (and a very dear friend of mine) is a Syrian Refugee who has been through more continuous hardships than I have space to list here; constantly navigating visa applications, unstable living conditions, predatory landlords (limited options as a refugee).

Anas just wants to make comics and live a normal life like what so many of us take for granted. Backing this campaign will help Anas to take the next step toward freedom and autonomy, helping to fund a move to another country with more stable employment options. This is truly one of the most important comics purchases you will ever make.

Middle Eastern and North African comics creators are some of the most underrepresented in the comics industry of the western world. Anas isn’t running a GoFundMe to support this move, and is not asking for charity. Simply, Anas is using their talent for storytelling, along with Dennis’ gorgeous art, to offer you a beautiful experience in the comics medium, that also goes toward funding a better life for Anas.

I’m so proud of Anas, and humbled by their experiences and perseverance. I would like to see Anas’ Dream realized, and I’d love to see this community help to make that happen. Please join me in pledging to the Etheres Kickstarter campaign! (link below). Etheres cover B

Thank you, Tony! And Ubisoft doesn't get a pass because it made some interesting games in the early 2010s - not if they abandon their commitment & go back to the same old colonialist history narratives!

And YES, there is a history to this! 🙏

There's a history here, too. @drsepinwall.bsky.social's brilliant Slave Revolt on Screen covers decades of attempts to create film, TV, and video game projects that would have delved into Haitian Revolution.

Comic books are (and this isn’t hyperbole) the greatest story telling medium that has ever existed. The combination of text and images rendered with a human hand is the most direct path from one mind to another. All other medium pale in comparison.
