Advent Neon by @cryogx.bsky.social - this game rules! IMO one of the best of the Sonic inspired platformers, with a lot of juice & a very clear voice. It's also 100% solo dev'd & VERY impressive. It's also got a demo.

back on my book bullshit. IDK why this feels incendiary to write, but the disconnect between hobbyists and actual indie game audiences is a pretty wide gulf which imo needs addressing in a book like this.
![First off, I don’t totally agree with the common idea that everyone tinkering with a game engine is really an “indie game developer”. When we talk about a game or a developer being “independent”, strictly-speaking this is a publishing term to do with how a videogame was funded. But it’s only really relevant if the games ever actually come out. Otherwise the person is just making hobby projects with the hopes of one of them eventually being good enough for people to want to pay money for it.

I have a passion for indie games because I like games which are interesting, novel, and innovative, and I want more of them to exist. This is the space in the industry where developers get to make what they want, following their own intuitions and interests. If an indie game secures some funding or publisher help later into development, it's still an indie game to me as long as the developer got to make what they wanted to make.
I don’t support indie game developers just to “root for the little guy” in some kind of anti-corporate David & Goliath narrative, or because I’m a game dev and that means I need to show solidarity with other devs. Indie games are often cast in this heroic role of challenging the creative and moral bankruptcy of big commercial studios, but this isn’t why I personally think they’re so important.
I support indie games and their developers because I believe that creative independence from funding sources leads to better games. Whether a game is funded by an “indie publisher” like Devolver or Annapurna Interactive, or by the developer’s wage at a day-job (or their spouses’) what matters is that the money doesn’t influence what gets made. Separation of Cash and Creativity, like Church and State.
