ICE is already responsible for overloading shelters bc detained/fleeing families have to leave beloved pets behind. ICE will also kill a lot more dogs.

I know @weratedogs.com is already bold in taking political stances, but any amplification of this carelessness could further grind down ICE's rep.

EL PASO — a family says ICE showed up at their house looking for migrants and shot and KILLED THEIR DOG, then didn’t help them as the agent ran away and was not identified.

While NATO could do better, a reminder:

All air defenses are leaky. The bomber always does get through. Really. Enough of them, anyway, to make a dent. And in the nuclear age, does not take many to ruin a day.

Stop imagining perfect shields, iron or golden domes.

Start imagining resilience.

Good question, no idea. Closer to Europe.

As one job candidate at McGill said long ago, a key attraction for the job was direct flights to Europe.

Montreal's March may be a smidge colder/more miserable than Toronto's but not meaningfully. Recent APSA's and ISA's in Montreal went well, right?

A tremendous failure by the media as this was pretty damned predictable.

If only there was social science on the effect of tariffs on prices....

But if the main job of Min of National Defence is as the National Defence Act has it: manage/direct CAF (and dare I say, oversee?), does Canada have even one?

How many MinDefs of late have been more than cheerleader/supporter? One? The aforementioned Anand. Not sure what McGuinty is doing. 2/

@plagasse.bsky.social has an interesting piece in his substack on how many defence ministers Canada has these days philippelagasse.substack.com/p/a-cabinet-... with Joly and Anand stepping a bit into that domain.

yeah, tradeoffs are difficult.

Foreign students in the US no. Foreign folks from everywhere else, yes.

A reminder to the Europeans watching, the US has no real history of general strikes.

So, this is what the Americans can do and they are doing it in a big way even if the media is not covering it that much.

The largest demonstration during Trump’s first term was around 750 events.

Interesting to see that the International Studies Association's planning for conferences now seems to be focused on alternating Vancouver/Toronto to avoid the US hellscape.
I get it and Vancouver will mean Whistler in March.
But Toronto is not lovely in March.

even Obama is now doing "What if Obama did x?"

I get the comparison, but Trump's behavior is so obviously awful and beyond any line, we don't really need to think hard about what would have happened had Obama or Biden done x.

OBAMA: “What if I sent the National Guard into Texas and said I don’t care what Governor Abbott says… and just kind of took over?”

Imagine that.

Fox News would’ve held a 96-hour emergency broadcast with 18 split screens and a countdown to “Tyranny Day.”

But when it’s Trump doing it? Crickets.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

Speaker Mike Johnson just said he's completely fine with ICE agents shooting priests in the head with pepper balls and roughing up journalists.

I'm sure he'll tell us soon about how it's the Democrats who are waging a war on religion and free speech though.

Q: We've seen images out of Chicago of federal agents shooting faith leaders with pepper balls and arresting journalists. Where's the limit for you on what's acceptable conduct by federal agents?

MIKE JOHNSON: I've not seen them cross the line yet.

A reminder that not that long ago Mike Johnson was too extreme, too much of a Christian nationalist to be leader of the House GOP. But then attrition happened where the party went through several others. So, the US now has the most extreme Speaker of the House since ... the Civil War?

JD Vance can dismiss the Young Republicans as a college group chat.

But let's be clear: the group chat includes a State Senator, a Trump Admin official, and multiple Republican staffers — and some of the worst comments came from folks associated with Mike Johnson, Elise Stefanik, and Mike Lawler.
