#SCOTUS denies a stay of execution to Alabama death-row prisoner Anthony Boyd, over *quite* a dissent from the three Democratic appointees, written by Justice Sotomayor, about the problems with nitrogen hypoxia as a method of execution:

Take out your phone, go to the clock app, and find the
stopwatch. Click start. Now watch the seconds as they
climb. Three seconds come and go in a blink. At the thirtysecond mark, your mind starts to wander. One minute
passes, and you begin to think that this is taking a long
time. Two . . . three . . . . The clock ticks on. Then, finally,
you make it to four minutes. Hit stop.
Now imagine for that entire time, you are suffocating.
You want to breathe; you have to breathe. But you are
strapped to a gurney with a mask on your face pumping
your lungs with nitrogen gas. Your mind knows that the
gas will kill you. But your body keeps telling you to breathe.
That is what awaits Anthony Boyd tonight. For two to
four minutes, Boyd will remain conscious while the State of
Alabama kills him in this way. When the gas starts flowing, he will immediately convulse. He will gasp for air. And

he will thrash violently against the restraints holding him
in place as he experiences this intense psychological torment until he finally loses consciousness. Just short of
twenty minutes later, Boyd will be declared dead.
Boyd asks for the barest form of mercy: to die by firing
squad, which would kill him in seconds, rather than by a
torturous suffocation lasting up to four minutes. The Constitution would grant him that grace. My colleagues do not.
This Court thus turns its back on Boyd and on the Eighth
Amendment’s guarantee against cruel and unusual punishment. Because the Court should have instead granted a
stay of execution and Boyd’s petition for certiorari, I respectfully dissent.

I get everyone is angry, but how can we expect people to "see the light" and do the right thing when they're met with such hostility when they do? Maybe this isn't for you. It's for the people who are still on the inside. We need a critical mass of defectors before others are willing to resist.

I'm not a slogan-chanter and, frankly, I'm pretty bad about being social and getting involved in group activities of any kind. But in today's newsletter I talk about how going to No Kings made me feel better. It made me feel like we're going to win. www.cupofcoffeenews.com/cup-of-coffe...

It's hard to say this without coming off corny as hell, but I cannot tell you how good and inspiring it was to be in that crowd. Not because I made new friends or got caught up chanting slogans or singing or whatever. And not because being there made me made me believe things are going to immediately change for the bette, because I know better. No, it felt good because it made me feel less alone and less crazy.

I work from home, I'm out in public less than a lot of people, and I spend a lot of my time taking in the world through my computer. When you do that it's easy to trick yourself into feeling like you're the only one at wit's end. It's easy to fool yourself into feeling like the rest of the world is just going about its business, not caring terribly much about the things that have depressed and enraged you for months. It's an absolute balm to be around a few thousand folks who are every bit if not more unhappy and angry and determined to make things better than you are and when you're among millions of people across the country feeling the same way.

That was especially true once I realized that the vast majority of the people there were nothing like me. There were old people and very young people. Some hardcore lefty types the sorts of which I converse with online sometimes but way, way, way more normal liberal or middle-of-the-road types holding signs that made me laugh or scratch my head. People who wouldn't, to their great credit mind you, understand half of the things I or the people I follow on social media rant about on a daily basis. And that's good! Partially because it means most folks aren't as internet poisoned as I am, but mostly because it reminds me that thousands of people have at least one super important thing in common: we don't like what's happening to this country and we want to fix it.

The shitheads running this country want us to feel isolated. They want us to feel weird and out-of-touch for not being on board with Trump's authoritarianism. They want us to despair and to give up. But when you see that several thousand of your neighbors are willing to come downtown on a Saturday – while the Buckeyes are playing no less! – to oppose tyranny and demand change, it's impossible to feel hopeless. It's impossible to feel alone.

A day of marching is not sufficient to stop the madness. But it's necessary. And it's encouraging. It's a reminder that there are more of us than there are of them. And that we're going to win.

The MAGA crowd seems very triggered that yesterday’s protest was historic, their comments are everywhere. In total, 22 MAGA individuals were arrested for attempting to attack peaceful protesters. Arrests were made in OH, KY, CA, SC, NC, MI, OR, FL, VA, TX, and PA.
