Very excited to announce that I'll have a short story out in the 2025 Great Lakes Fiction Writers anthology. The anthology title is DREAMS AND DRIFTWOOD: STORIES SET ALONG THE GREAT LAKES, and it is coming out very, very soon!

My story is called "The Duke Against the Ropes." Since one of the requirements for stories was having a connection to the Great Lakes, you might ask yourself: how did she get a duke in there?

I guess you'll just have to grab the anthology to find out 😉🥰

Hot damn, if I hadn't already turned in my story for this year's Great Lakes Fiction Writers anthology, I might be trying a Law & Order "ripped from the headlines" angle 😂😂😂
I was absolutely delighted by this newsletter - to learn there is a name for something I do all the time in my writing, to understand better why it works, is so helpful.
i know i neglect this platform a lot but for those of you who may have been missing my musings on romance prose here’s a little something 🖤https://kateclayborn.substack.com/p/i-finished-my-book
I finished my book!
so of course I want to talk about syntax

In the past week, I've transferred my newsletter over to beehiiv from Substack, changed all the links everywhere, and made some progress on a short story for this year's anthology. #amwriting

You know how movies will have a montage of a couple going to the farmer's market, walking on the beach, etc.? A lot of romance novel writing is figuring out what the heck they're talking about through all of that. 🥰

Trying to write while watching football - I finally had an IDEA for a story that I need to write soon, and now I'm sitting down to work it out. #amwriting
And I can't send out this year without celebrating that I had a story in an anthology produced by my local writers group!

Love on the Lakefront, including my story called "Caught Looking," is available now: books2read.com/loveonthelak...
Looking forward to reading my way and *ahem* writing, hopefully, my way through 2025!

But in a "begin as you mean to go on" kind of way, I'm in the middle of a Lorraine Heath book I probably won't finish by midnight.
While some experimented with structure and voice, others executed the hell out of clever or daring premises.
As I was going through my lists of books, I decided to focus on this year's releases, but not just the 5-star reads. These 6 books have all stuck with me in some way, and all have amazing character development.
End of year means #FavoriteReadsOf2024!

Here are some of my favorite 2024 romance releases:

-At First Spite, Olivia Dade
-Home Ice Advantage, Ari Baran
-Right Where We Left Us, Jen Devon
-Marriage & Masti, Nisha Sharma
-The Pairing, Casey McQuiston
-How to End a Love Story, Yulin Kuang
Oh man, I use Pacemaker, but I didn't know it could do THIS.
Pacemaker is where I nail down the REAL schedule. Where I decide: is this book a weekend book or a weekday book?

I can shift between projects in a day, but I prefer having designated days for each project, it makes me brain happy. And Pacemaker is Queen of Doing That and More.

I write erotic books! People constantly call them soft porn. Or sometimes not-so-soft porn. LOL

They are plenty deep, and their purpose is many-layered! But even if that wasn't true, we do not through sexual content under the bus!

The people trying to ban books think all romance is porn!
Romance NEEDS to have a good plot. I suspect that people who think romance lacks such conflate romance with soft porn novels, which aren't generally known for being particularly deep, given that their purpose is tintillation, not experiencialism.
btw just a gentle announcement in general, especially for folks dipping their toes into romance.

I know this *feels* like a compliment to a lot of people, but it's pretty much a "pistols at dawn" level insult
God, this is such a pretty cover.
Behold the gorgeous cover for the last book in the Luna Sisters series, GABRIELA AND HIS GRACE! I die! 😍 Cover artist Camila Gray & designer Katie Anderson hit it out of the park!

GABRIELA AND HIS GRACE will be available August 26th!

Did a little math, and I added 19,966 words to the second draft of my big WIP in November! Not quite NaNo level, and maybe a little less far than I wanted to be at this time, but I'll take it! #AmWriting #WriterSky
-makes notes for myself-
Hello.

If you are a historical romance reader, who are your favs outside of the big names?

I am working on a Christmas present for myself (the best kind).

I need some historical dopamine in the lineup this January.
Amazing. Now checked out in KU!
Not to reopen a discourse, but I'm watching Twisters again. When people talked about the no-kiss-situation, I think we didn't talk enough about how she really seemed to love that guy she was with at the beginning, and how terrifying that whole opening sequence was.
A good reminder!
Been seeing a bunch of "aspiring writer" recently. You want to be a writer? *POOF* you're a writer. That's it. Write some stuff. You are a writer. Now, if you want to be a published writer, well there are so many ways for that, too. Figure out your ACTUAL goal. Then go for it. But you're a writer.
All these winter transaction updates for baseball teams, players moving, coaches hired, and I wish my brain would stop seeing a story premise in every single goddamn one of them because I already have too many things to finish
