The same thing is true of grades. These tools have worked well enough for long enough, but if they’re no longer serviceable then no amount of punishment and surveillance will preserve positive outcomes.

We give assignments because they help students register and reflect on their own learning. If the classic assignment structure no longer performs that function than we need to shift what suite of tools help provide students with those insights.

Meanwhile my university administration censored a piece of art in their museum because it included one patch that had been embroidered with the words “Save the children” and “Abolish ICE,” claiming that it was “overtly political in nature.” It was not even the main focus of the entire piece.

ICE secretly kidnap autistic boy during bathroom break—never notify parents.

Mother reported him missing a week ago—turns out ICE had him detained the whole time.

He was helping sell fruit and asked to go to the restroom—by the time she was done helping a customer he was gone.

Not for nothing but I'd be so mad if I showed somebody a cool problem/assignment I wrote and their first instinct was to drop it into ChatGPT for any reason whatsoever.

I'm pretty upset about what this implies for academic freedom!

Meanwhile administration at my university decided to go all in on censoring an art exhibit, now trying to downplay it as no big deal.

California School Shutters Exhibition After Altering "Political" Art

Pepperdine University abruptly closed the show as at least a dozen artists asked to withdraw in protest of what they called an act of censorship.

(image courtesy the artist) In response to the school's actions, Mann and AMBOS requested that their works be withdrawn from the show.

Both artists told Hyperallergic that Pepperdine administration did not explain their decision. In response to Hyperallergic's inquiry, a representative for the school cited the works' political content. "Because Pepperdine's established practice with the Weisman Museum has been to avoid overtly political content consistent with the University's nonprofit status, it removed these two pieces from display," Michael Friel, Pepperdine's senior director of Communications and Public Relations, told Hyperallergic.

The Virginia Senate just told UVA it’s not getting state funding if it accepts the compact since UVA exists to serve Virginia, its residents, & their interests—not be a tool of the federal govt. Here's a snippet from the MIT president's letter to ED
Screenshot from link that reads: The document also includes principles with which we disagree, including those that would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution. And fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone.

In our view, America’s leadership in science and innovation depends on independent thinking and open competition for excellence. In that free marketplace of ideas, the people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, without preferences. Therefore, with respect, we cannot support the proposed approach to addressing the issues facing higher education.

Wild to hear journalists refer to US citizens that have been kidnapped by ICE as "wrongfully detained" because, uh, I can't be the first one telling you this, but they're all wrongfully detained!

Oregon National Guard Adjutant General, General Gronewold says if they are federalized, that he will advise the Title 10 commander to utilize National Guard Troops to PROTECT protesters at ICE facilities. This is the right answer.
