I don't think this is unhinged but it's a little unusual. The great editors should be as well known as the great authors. I think can think of many 'great' novels that needed a great editor to tighten the book.

Many of the old dead white guys did know better. HPL was pretty bad even for his time. But we tend to give them more leeway than they might deserve because we enjoy their works.
