So the new Shakira song for Zootopia 2, which exists diagetically in the film, includes the lyric "we're turning the floor into a zoo," implying that in the world of the film, which is comprised of talking bipedal animals, they have and understand the concept of a "zoo."
In this essay, etc.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Me listening to Springsteen: "Well that was some perfectly nice 80's pop-rock. Always like creative instrumentation."
Some people, for some reason: "This is AMERICA! And also SEX! He's turned YEARNING into MUSIC ITSELF! TRANSCENDENCE! Also DENIM is a big part of it somehow!"

It really must be a cultural thing, bc I am extremely not from the tri-state area and I've tried giving Springsteen a shot and it not only doesn't speak to me, I hear people talk about how it *does* speak to them and its like they're speaking a different language, or see colors different than me.

Sometimes I still have "Yeah, smash the ship! Smash the ship! Bellbots are Baaaaaad!" pop into my head, almost 30 years later.

I'm hardly the first person to point out that the technical limitations of old games meant that the good ones relied on art and using the limitations to their advantage to create a vibes-based experience in the player's mind that is sometimes richer than the one created by being "realistic."
thecapybaron.bsky.social
The art and design and the (for the time) open-ended nature of the text-based interaction system did a great job of hinting at something bigger and richer than the technical limitations could actually allow you to engage with, and the slightly uncanny pre-rendered CGI added to the dreaminess.

Played a ton of this game on a family PC that could barely run it, the CD drive absolutely screaming trying to keep up.
I never really "got" it, but I thought it was funny, and enjoyed the semi-accidentally spooky vibes of exploring what the kids today will not-quite-correctly call "liminal spaces."

... So, I am perhaps just now realizing that I have been conflating "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "M. Butterfly" for decades.
Just vaguely "a show that was on Broadway in the early 90's and is about a gay dude in a foreign country and also there's a bug in the title."

All I am saying is I have met some people, and learned some interesting things from some of them about trains, or birds, or the Muppets, and I do not see the correlation.

Listen. I may not have collected the biggest sample size in the world, but I can tell you that my informal review of the data shows that it is *not* determinative.

Besides linking Tylenol in pregnant women to autism, RFK Jr. now says circumcision is part of the reason why kids are autistic.

"Children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism, and it's highly likely because they're given Tylenol. None of this is positive..."

The silver lining every time Rubio does this is that you can tell he's not one of the True Believers, just a dutiful toady with a desperate addiction to power, and you can see in his eyes that he's embarrassed.
thecapybaron.bsky.social
He will say and do anything for a sniff of power, but unlike most of these guys, there's a tiny shard of a still-human soul in there that is humiliated by what he has to do every day.
I'm not saying this to praise him, but rather, because it is very funny to imagine how miserable he is
