Me listening to Springsteen: "Well that was some perfectly nice 80's pop-rock. Always like creative instrumentation."
Some people, for some reason: "This is AMERICA! And also SEX! He's turned YEARNING into MUSIC ITSELF! TRANSCENDENCE! Also DENIM is a big part of it somehow!"

It really must be a cultural thing, bc I am extremely not from the tri-state area and I've tried giving Springsteen a shot and it not only doesn't speak to me, I hear people talk about how it *does* speak to them and its like they're speaking a different language, or see colors different than me.

Sometimes I still have "Yeah, smash the ship! Smash the ship! Bellbots are Baaaaaad!" pop into my head, almost 30 years later.

I'm hardly the first person to point out that the technical limitations of old games meant that the good ones relied on art and using the limitations to their advantage to create a vibes-based experience in the player's mind that is sometimes richer than the one created by being "realistic."
thecapybaron.bsky.social
The art and design and the (for the time) open-ended nature of the text-based interaction system did a great job of hinting at something bigger and richer than the technical limitations could actually allow you to engage with, and the slightly uncanny pre-rendered CGI added to the dreaminess.

Played a ton of this game on a family PC that could barely run it, the CD drive absolutely screaming trying to keep up.
I never really "got" it, but I thought it was funny, and enjoyed the semi-accidentally spooky vibes of exploring what the kids today will not-quite-correctly call "liminal spaces."

You can always tell people who didn't work their way up through real jobs and manage based on the dumbest ideas they've heard of other terrible bosses doing.

... So, I am perhaps just now realizing that I have been conflating "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "M. Butterfly" for decades.
Just vaguely "a show that was on Broadway in the early 90's and is about a gay dude in a foreign country and also there's a bug in the title."

All I am saying is I have met some people, and learned some interesting things from some of them about trains, or birds, or the Muppets, and I do not see the correlation.

Listen. I may not have collected the biggest sample size in the world, but I can tell you that my informal review of the data shows that it is *not* determinative.

Besides linking Tylenol in pregnant women to autism, RFK Jr. now says circumcision is part of the reason why kids are autistic.

"Children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism, and it's highly likely because they're given Tylenol. None of this is positive..."

The silver lining every time Rubio does this is that you can tell he's not one of the True Believers, just a dutiful toady with a desperate addiction to power, and you can see in his eyes that he's embarrassed.
thecapybaron.bsky.social
He will say and do anything for a sniff of power, but unlike most of these guys, there's a tiny shard of a still-human soul in there that is humiliated by what he has to do every day.
I'm not saying this to praise him, but rather, because it is very funny to imagine how miserable he is

It would be incredible if it turns into a Bizarro Fetterman situation. Medical treatment from an actual doctor instead of the Munchausen-by-Proxy daughter, some non-beef nutrients from a few days of hospital food, and his brain corrects itself and he is suddenly capable of empathy.

*Eight* different "limited edition" variants of the same album at launch?
*Eight*?!
Screenshot from the Defector review of the new Taylor Swift album:
"As it has been for her past few releases, Swift's business acumen has been on display in full force for the promotion for The Life of a Showgirl. Upon announcing the album, Swift put up a vinyl for pre-order on her site, and then another, and then another. Before the album was even released, she had promoted and sold on her site eight exclusive vinyl variants in different colors with different names ("Sweat And Vanilla Perfume Edition," "Baby, That’s Show Business Edition," etc.), and eight CDs, and one sweater which comes with a CD. The vinyls cost $34. The CDs cost $20. The sweater/CD costs $70. And one of those was a Target exclusive edition! Don’t forget Target! The marketing scheme for each of these releases (which came one after another) was scarcity. They will sell out! You will never have another opportunity! Hurry! Show your love and devotion!"

Being a Retvrn guy, but for this:
The old GamePro game rating system which rated "Graphics" "Sound" "Control" "Fun Factor" and "Challenge" using little smiley-faced cartoons.

Woof. I've never been an outright hater, I like some of the catchier singles, but this is absolutely brutal and feels correct to me.
This album launch isn't an artist making a creative statement, it's a content brand pushing out its 2025 collection.
