to realize that the difference between her and me isn't "talent" it's "willingness to make something that kind of sucks, figure out why it sucks, then fix it." I worry that we as a culture are going to lose that if these trends continue.

my sister got a prestigious award and used the garbage extrusion engine to write her acceptance speech for her, and when I was like o.O she said "I'm not like you, I'm not creative, I'm not talented, I don't write" but she's on Facebook every day writing thousands of words. it's so FRUSTRATING>

this thought is a little underbaked but it's all the same process I think, the two-jawed trap of "if you aren't doing something professionally then you aren't really doing it" and "artists, writers, musicians, etc. aren't valuable, only Content™️ is valuable"

"oh I'm not a writer, I can't do it" but you could! if you tried! if you wrote some stuff then deleted and rewrote it and asked a friend for feedback then revised it then went "okay maybe it isn't perfect but it'll do" because that's the process. and chatgpt is there to tell you "actually you can't"

you're right, but it's an overvaluing, too: nothing makes me sadder than regular people who'd rather have the plagiarism engine spit out something pleasantly corporate-neutral than go through the pain and vulnerability of writing their own eulogies, wedding vows, etc.

something that's obvious to me, but not necessarily to everyone: the cat skull I've been painstakingly cleaning and reassembling this week is not Calamari's.

I lost Calamari on Friday, and I've been in kind of a holding pattern about mourning her, waiting for test results, since we didn't know if it was something contagious that my other cats might still get. (It's not.)
