If I wake up in a horror movie, I’ve already survived Freddy Krueger.

In the spirit of spooky season, I got an
interactive thread for yall 🤭

You wake up trapped in a horror movie. Which villain are you confident you could survive?

• Pennywise
• Michael Myers
• Candyman
• Jason
• Freddy Krueger

Prior to 2010 it was practically impossible to watch HAUSU outside of an unsubtitled VHS dub!

I remember the 1996 edition of Videohound’s cult movie guide gave it a tepid 2 bones, but the revised edition in 2002 bumped it up to a full 4.

It was definitely considered inessential when I went through TP in high school— I didn’t get around to it until the DVD came out (a couple years after I finished the series) and was blown away!

Probably tough to overstate Criterion’s role here too— foreign films are much more easily accessible than they once were, and they’ve played a huge part in that.

In general I think there’s been a major shift in the past 20ish years where people went from learning about films in books and review sites to Letterboxd/social media and podcasts, which has reshapes the canon in pretty dramatic ways.

I’ve said this before, but Michael Mann feels MUCH more enshrined in the film-geek pantheon than when I was coming up in the early ‘00s.

Kind of incredible that political discourse in America has organically evolved into “good frogs vs. bad frogs.”

I'm finally starting this project to watch the entire Touchstone Pictures filmography (every film associated with the Disney label whether through production or distribution) from 1984-2016 & share my thoughts on each release in this thread. Follow along as I revisit the hits, misses & obscurities.

I am incapable of hearing the title “HAMNET” and not picturing a pig-themed Dragnet parody.

I didn’t win the Nobel Peace Prize this year either, if anyone’s wondering.

One thing I’ll never quite understand is why music videos didn’t regain cultural prominence in the 2010s, when YouTube became a primary avenue for listening to music.

I really wish there was a way to make CEOs hear every normal person’s moan of disappointment when they realize the cute/funny video they’re watching is AI.

'The consumer doesn't care if what they're looking at is AI' YES THEY DO WE KEEP HEARING THAT THEY DO maybe there's a percentage that don't BUT MANY PEOPLE REALLY FUCKING DO CARE

Say what you will about Pitchfork, but they definitely would have found a way to put some late period Scott Walker on that 21st century songs list.

I heard an interview with Bruce McCulloch where he said, “If anyone has ever been under the impression we were cool, it’s because of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.”

Amazing! Would love to see it on the big screen someday.

Also worth seeking out the alternate version, retitled DAUGHTER OF HORROR, in which the distributor attempted to boost its commercial appeal by adding narration read by Ed McMahon (!!!)

Legitimately incredible film. Think Maya Deren disguised as Ed Wood.

Dementia (1955) is a dialogueless fever dream film about a woman's nightmare experience on a single night in LA. Made a decade too early to be a hit, it's a mix of German expressionism and American noir and closer to 60s films like Carnival of Souls and Polanski's Repulsion. It's worth an hour of

I went there when I was in London a few years ago and felt the same way! Over here in New England we at least have Bull Moose Records, which isn’t as massive, but is the sort of CD/DVD/book store which was plentiful in the ‘90s but almost extinct now.

Also found an original (or at least early) pressing of FOREVER CHANGES there for under $30, which is something that has been impossible stateside for decades.

I cannot tell you the near-religious epiphany I experienced when I went to Tokyo this year and found a Tower Records which is a) still open, b) bustling with activity, and c) EIGHT STORIES HIGH.

the loss of Tower Records is comparable to the Library of Alexandria imo
