I remember the 1996 edition of Videohound’s cult movie guide gave it a tepid 2 bones, but the revised edition in 2002 bumped it up to a full 4.

It was definitely considered inessential when I went through TP in high school— I didn’t get around to it until the DVD came out (a couple years after I finished the series) and was blown away!

Probably tough to overstate Criterion’s role here too— foreign films are much more easily accessible than they once were, and they’ve played a huge part in that.

In general I think there’s been a major shift in the past 20ish years where people went from learning about films in books and review sites to Letterboxd/social media and podcasts, which has reshapes the canon in pretty dramatic ways.

One thing I’ll never quite understand is why music videos didn’t regain cultural prominence in the 2010s, when YouTube became a primary avenue for listening to music.

Dementia (1955) is a dialogueless fever dream film about a woman's nightmare experience on a single night in LA. Made a decade too early to be a hit, it's a mix of German expressionism and American noir and closer to 60s films like Carnival of Souls and Polanski's Repulsion. It's worth an hour of

I went there when I was in London a few years ago and felt the same way! Over here in New England we at least have Bull Moose Records, which isn’t as massive, but is the sort of CD/DVD/book store which was plentiful in the ‘90s but almost extinct now.

I cannot tell you the near-religious epiphany I experienced when I went to Tokyo this year and found a Tower Records which is a) still open, b) bustling with activity, and c) EIGHT STORIES HIGH.
