but i think this might be symptomatic of a lot of the booktok/threads audience etc not reading much outside the “official” categories of Romance and Romantasy

and not realising that Everything really IS Romantic, “romance” exists in every genre and that doesn’t need to be defended

Most historical war epics have a romance plot! Even the ones that are respected literary classics! Going back to the Iliad! It’s a convention of the genre and part of the human experience! Men and women fight and endure for love!

admittedly I was on the side that “the fandom needs to talk about the story and themes other than the romance,“ because we need to debunk the lie that this book is slave fetish fic and sell it to dark fantasy/wartime lit readers who ‘don’t like romance’ (what this guy is trying to do!)

there are a lot of new women readers who like ‘romantasy’ but don’t want to read anything with heavier plot/themes or a male main character

and that’s the main demographic propping up sales on booktok/gram/tube

i will always hate the term ’romantasy’, it’s a fake division that is erasing the history of women writing romance in sff

but I’m not sure whether it might be helping authors financially albeit harming them reputationally

since we’re now seeing old books reprinted with ‘romantasy’ marketing

plus the 3 biggest YA fantasy phenomena of the 21st century were all written by women - HP, Twilight, Hunger Games

Tw and HG had mostly female readers, so that’s where the current generation of adult readers is coming from

Total sales figures news:

Brandon Sanderson (debuted in 2005): 45 million

Sarah J Maas (debuted in 2014): 75 million

The updated figures for Sanderson (via the Edelweiss catalogue) now have him at 45 million, which would move him up to around 24th place. Very healthy and impressive. Unsurprising as in the meantime he's released his long-awaited fifth Stormlight Archive novel, Wind and Truth, and is now working on a return to his perennially popular Mistborn sequence..

But the updated figures for Maas, straight from her publisher, are eye-popping. The updated figures put her at 75 million (!), which would rocket her up to around 17th on the list and instantly make her one of the biggest-selling, living fantasy writers.

To be clear, I don't think Maas has sold another 40 million books in just eighteen months. Instead, her publisher has noted that she is now published in forty languages, and it's likely they'd been severely underestimating her prior sales. Updated sales information from foreign sales is the most likely source for this large-seeming jump.

It is worth noting that Maas published her first novel only in 2014, nine years after Sanderson published his first book. This shows the full, unmitigated firepower of the Romantasy subgenre and its enthusiastic fanbase eclipses even that of fans of hard magic systems and intricate worldbuilding.

I feel like I see a lot of things called queerbaiting that are either queer media, which should be allowed to ship bait because the queerness is not the thing they're baiting you with, or stuff slash fandoms liked that never specifically tried to cater to them. It requires the fandom and intention!

I am also specifically calling the demographic that is being exploited here "slash fandom" because not all queer audiences are being exploited and not all audiences being exploited are queer. But "slash fandom" is a marketable demographic for queer content, and playing both sides with them uses that
