CRPGs use prose the same way that Silent Hill uses fog - as a way to overcome the technical limitations of the format to deliver what you want (choices and roleplaying) without breaking the budget, both computational and budgetary

I think choice is becoming a victim of technological advances and player expectations. If you choose whether Bob or Jim live in a SNES RPG, you’ve got a different set of pixels and text boxes. Now you‘ve got a new set of voice lines, Hollywood tier animations, etc.

Thinking about it, the original Deus Ex may be the king of choice in a game with a story, because your choices are significant, linked to gameplay and unforced. From the very start, for instance, whether you use or avoid lethal force against the “terrorists” determines something about you.

They read words but cannot parse sentences, they see ONE word & make up a thing that allows them to intake it but it's wrong, etc

I know writers have these bright, risk-taking books ready to go, and it is so frustrating to see publishing companies self sabotaging themselves with self-inflicted straitjackets and then wondering why there has been no "new" generation defining book that changes everything.

I think about this alot not just in relationship to YA, but definitely I worry that the unexpected breakout books like Hunger Games that defined an era (and still do so) would now be deemed too risky to take on. But risk is what creates genre-defining works imo
