The desperate need to accumulate more and more at the cost of everyone else’s wellbeing should be classified as a mental disorder, and I will absolutely die on this hill.
Guillermo del Toro on wealth: "a wealthy man is a man who has enough, not a man that needs more. If you have enough to invite someone for a beer? You're rich. If you have a yacht, planes, islands, and you still need more? You're not rich."

Reading this paragraph--written by the editors of Wired, the most well-known tech publication--at BOE meetings in districts rushing AI seems like a good idea.

Ask why they are treating children like guinea pigs while pretending they can predict a future those most knowledgable about tech cannot.
"which typically do at least gesture towards building students' cognitive capabilities. "AI," to the contrary, serves to undermine these – undermine cognition, autonomy, and agency."

The thing that bothers me so much is not the “we have to enforce our borders and laws.” We do.

It’s the giddy joy and celebration they have at the misery of people far less fortunate.

Hegseth: "A few months ago I was at the White House when President Trump announced his liberation day for America's trade policy. It was a landmark day. Well, today is another liberation day. The liberation of America's warriors ... you kill people and break things for a living."

Too often, tech creates logistical problems that disrupt learning.

My 6th grader's school, for ex, uses Chromebooks for everything. But the kids haven't learned typing, so work takes longer than by hand. And they often forget to charge the devices at home, so class gets wasted trying to plug in.
Say it often, say it loud:

"Overall, research has not supported the common-sense presumption that digital approaches to schooling are better than non-digital alternatives. At the broadest level, widespread computer use in education has been found to be associated with lower student achievement."
Fit for Purpose? How Today’s Commercial Digital Platforms Subvert Key Goals of Public Education

The UN report makes plain what so many families in Gaza have been living through: the deliberate destruction of Palestinians.

We have a moral responsibility to stop enabling this genocide and hold Israel accountable.

Everybody gamely says “Vance hosted Kirk’s podcast” instead of “the regime officially turned the major channel into state-controlled media just as it began its violent crackdown on any opposition or dissident messages.”

The Supreme Court bans affirmative action in university admissions but is okay with racial profiling on American streets. That pretty much sums up white supremacy--heads I win, tails you lose, all legal.

This is really important. As with so many other things, the solution can't be robustly funded public higher education, because that would benefit *others* too (see Heather McGhee’s The Sum of Us). so the answer has to lie in the fact that *too many* people are getting education
I'm a professor at the flagship university for the fourth whitest state in the US. Over 80% of our students are white.

The biggest barrier to access here is that due to lack of state funding, we have top 10 highest tuition per capita of public unis in the country.

We also have a food pantry.
oh, we have some straightforward gutter racism. “the blacks and the browns are the reason white people can’t get ahead” www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

You can tolerate a low national bar for education etc. as long as your kid is getting “the best” of it, and is most likely to get into the school that gives them the “best” chances. Think how different that is than fighting for better, more affordable schools for everyone
