Discworld QOTD, from Small Gods
That's why it's always worth having a few philosophers around the place. One minute it's all is truth beauty and is beauty truth, and does a falling tree in the forest make a sound if there's no one there to hear it, and then just when you think they're going to start dribbling one of 'em says, incidentally, putting a thirty-foot parabolic reflector on a high place to shoot the rays of the sun at an enemy's ships would be a very interesting demonstration of optical principles.

Jim Grenon who now has significant control over NZME (which includes the NZ Herald & Newstalk ZB) is the closest comparison to Bezos, but that's only happened recently, the damage was done by not paywalling sooner & clickbait chasing. TVNZ is in exactly the same spot & TV3 probably was never liable

Related to this & the whole "Wah, the Govt is drowning in debt!" argument here's the relevant section from the Govt's 2025 accounts.

Yes, the Govt is paying over $10bn in interest BUT it also received over $7bn interest so the net interest payable is $3.35bn or 0.76% of GDP. Different story now eh?

IMO, journalists are a classic iteration of lions led by donkeys.

What's really staggering is even allowing for factors such as Google/Facebook undermining their ad revenue, editorial choices allied to ownership interference has resulted in colossal financial loss for owners. Self-sabotage really.

Spent a lot of time gathering signatures for the referendum against those sales. IIRC we in deepest blue North Shore of Auckland got more signatures than some electorates in friendlier territory.

It's staggering that US military personnel are currently not getting paid. Throughout history unpaid troops are just trouble in waiting. The ineptitude required for that to happen is off the scale. Probably just as well it is an all-volunteer force. Unpaid conscripts in the mix would be interesting.

Govt to cut #JobSeeker benefit for 18 & 19 year olds who’s parents earn over $65,000, even if the teens have a disability or health condition. With #CostOfLiving & the job shortage they’re cranking up stress levels to 11, all to meet a target.
My #cartoon today about hard-nosed #NZpol
Cartoon. Title: “Job Seeee-e-e-e” Image shows PM Christopher Luxon at the open hatch of a small plane, high above farmland. He’s leaning out, and holding up a parachute pack, labelled “Job Seeker” He’s calling out to someone falling from the plane, “And I’ve kept your parachute because you kids from low-income homes need some motivation” Then he adds, “Don’t let that disability slow you down!”

We live in a Māori nation. Our Parliament should reflect that more. The haka from the public gallery is an appropriate response to a maiden speech. Suspended Parliament only reminds Māori that they are not welcome to be authentically themselves there. #nzpol

Say what you will about New Zealand and there’s certainly a lot to say but at least our govt doesn’t randomly run out of money and shutdown and stop functioning. The United States Congress is somehow more incompetent than Nicola Willis. Can you imagine.

OMG the National Party totally screwed up the vote on the Broadcasting Bill. First they didn’t have signed proxies for the conscience vote. Then they didn’t have the 20 members in the house required for a conscience vote - so the vote is a nullity. Politics 101 learn to count !!!

to all the Labour mps on here can you tell your leader we need a commitment to reverse the Jobseekers policy that National has just introduced. Thats not giving your policy away that is exercising basic humanity and getting rid of very poorly formulated policy. Just say it. Come on.
