People are spontaneously posting up near any laborers or street vendors they spot. Just saw a rapid responder guarding a man working on a building exterior. Many things are terrible today but lord, this stuff matters.

There are a tremendous number of ICE watchers out in Rogers Park this afternoon after some early morning abductions.

People are guarding churches and patrolling alleyways. Ran into Alderperson Hadden. First timers tell us they're primed and ready to use their whistles.

This film archive has everything: atonal synth music, questionable optical printing, off-label uses for polyester, and enough weird chinoiserie to give Edward Said sn aneurysm

No Leader Ladies tho

what exactly has gotten better for the average person in the past 20 years with all the innovation such as AI, exactly? what's the social use case here

I’ve admired Danyel Smith since she was writing for Spin. Shine Bright is brilliant. Read it.

But you gotta understand that if a white woman does it , repeatedly and only when insulting Black achievements even in the age of Google , research and Chat GLT especially since Twitter is unseaechable

She’s just spunky or she’s “learning”

Them admitting it was a strategy doesn’t matter

One of the reasons trolling has gone from the online margins to the center of our political discourse is due to the insistence that targets of trolling have the obligation to ignore it rather than pushing back against people being deliberately offensive towards marginalized people.

I saw Night of the Living Dead 20 or so years after seeing it as a child (and not having a good time) when I worked at a film archive in a deserted coastal town in January

Every time the breeze blew, the walls creaked

My boss scared me when he came to check on me

What’s the scariest horror movie you’ve ever seen?

The earliest this will be released is August 2026, and that feels optimistic

These things always take longer than you think they will

The bad news is that I’m not eligible for the big grant, since I received one in 2023

This is fine in the long run, but I might have to run a crowdfunding campaign to cover the costs of hiring a publicist and making a video

First, the good news:

I finished and submitted my application for a local cultural council grant

I asked for $950 to cover the costs of recording vocals for and mastering Mrs Parker

I will probably get less than that

THAT director aside, Diane Keaton’s performance in Annie Hall opened spaces for women in film: what romantic leads could look like, dress like, sound like; that there could be a place for an oddball who wasn’t a screwball. That’s all her - Keaton was such a brilliant actress and icon, truly

If you asked this 15 years ago I would have said My So-Called Life

GenAI truly was the worst technology to come along at this moment.

An energy and water guzzler when we most urgently need to take climate action.

A disinformation machine as our journalism fails.

A bias machine as fascism takes root.

A job killer in a cost of living crisis.

The "cognitive decline and brain damage from repeat COVID infections" and "easy to use robot that makes slop and melts your critical thinking skills" is a hell of a combo in a post-fact media ecosystem

Atsuko is great. For white guys, I like Joe Pera a lot.

I had a running joke with one of my friends on the old site about how my father stole the finial and used it to pay for his girlfriend’s in-patient card at McLean’s (none of this happened, to be clear)

Doing stand up now or attending a show, I feel like people have to swim through a sea of dick jokes and homophobia just to get to the comic that is different and great.

I, at least, like to be a breath of fresh air in there somewhere.

You know what's wonderful?

Every time I see a new Netflix comedy special drop not knowing if it's someone who's going to be funny or someone who is just going rant for 70min about how your existence has forced them to be a hateful bigot.

I just don't watch standup comedy anymore. Too exhausting.
